Going from X23B hybrid to 29REKS White Hawk

Hi all and thank you in advance. We have an X23B and love it, but are considering a move up the to 29REKS. I have a couple of concerns I'd like addressed:

1. It is roughly 10 ft longer then the X23B. Is it a lot harder to handle in gas stations and campgrounds?

2. For those who have moved up, have you lost availability of camp grounds due to size?

Thank you!

I went from a 25 foot Layton to a 35 foot Jayflight 32RLDS... so roughly 10' 6" in length is what I increased.

1) a- Yes, it will be more of a challenge in regular gas stations to handle. Usually with my trailer, I pull into Truck stops so I can fill with the Semi's (obviously I have a diesel, so that works for me) You may also need to figure in height. My new trailer is about 3' higher then the Layton. b- it will depend on the camp ground. I have been in to some campgrounds and had zero problems parking my trailer. the last 2 trips, I had to get creative so I didn't take out a tree or my truck fenders by the tree.

2 ) You will also need to find longer camping spots. I usually request a 50' spot, but will take a 45' if nothing is available. With my other trailer, I could squeeze into a 35' or bigger spot, so my options are limited now

best of luck. We are very happy we chose the 32RLDS and wouldn't go back to the Layton for anything.

Thank you very much for your response. You have pretty much summed up what I think we would be headed for, and your comment about no going back is interesting.

So you haven't found dealing with the bigger size to be an issue worth going back for if you could?

And going around normal traffic corners, etc. Right turns, etc you don't find the extra 10 feet much harder to manage?

Thx!

Traffic won't bother you. You would only need an extra foot or so of swing, no big deal. Patience thats all

We jumped from the X23B to 351 RLTS. Wow, what a jump it was. 24' vs 39'. That said, we'd never go back. Bumper pull vs 5th, different turning experience that I've had to master ( well, I'm getting better). Fuel stops? Pretty much I stick with truck stops now. I've read it's called "2 foot-itis". Guess we doubled up. If you can tow the 23B you can handle the 29REKS. You hadda learn it the first time, you'll get it the second time. We loved the 23B, but go back? Never!
We've not really lost any availability since we like the comfy CG's.
What about your TV? I'm a nut about weights, make sure you got the right TV.
The CAT Scale is your friend.

Post your adventures and questions! I promise your questions will make the old dogs think and those just starting out say, "ahhh, I was just wondering".

WOW I'll say that's quite a jump!

We tow with a Tundra Crewmax 4x4 with the 5.7L V8 and tow package. Having said that, I was AMAZED at burning nearly an ENTIRE tank of gas going from Phoenix up the hill to Flagstaff pulling the X23B loaded up (Approx 125 miles, 1400-6900ft climb). I can't imagine how far I'd get pulling 8500-9000 pounds.

I haven't even asked you guys about the gas consumption yet pulling the bigger rigs.

You will want to check your trucks payload and towing capacity. The 29reks is fairly heavy trailer for a 1/2 ton pickup. Specs list the TT at 755lb dry hitch weight which is probably 800-850b loaded weight and a unloaded weight of 7025 with loaded GVW of 8500b. That is really pushing a 1/2 ton truck. You will really have to be careful on how you load the trailer.

Re: 10' longer;

We moved up 5' and 1,500 lbs. The best way to call the change is "Noticeable".

A WDH was not needed on the old trailer and our tow barely noticed it back there. The new trailer, even with a WDH takes a bit more attention.

Considering the amount of comfort and usefulness in the trailer upgrade, the changes in towing it are definitely worth it!

Well it certainly sounds like the increase in size is worth the trade off in towing considerations.

When we changed TT's we also changed TV's. Went from a gasser to diesel. This is my first pickup and first diesel and I love both parts of that equation. Pulling the X23B with the Expe we saw mileage in the 9's. With the diesel (it's a beast!) we get in the 12's pulling the 5th weighing about 12700#. I've seen low 13's a couple of times but that's the exception.

Don't get me started on Diesel....

2013 Jetta TDI, 4 tractors and a compressor. Love, love LOVE 'em!

43-48 MPG on the Jetta. Much safer to handle & store spare fuel. Ok, I'll give in on the stink.

More efficient than gasoline. Tougher and closer tolerance construction on the engines.

[/end rant]
