Grease on wheel from over-heated brakes?

We have a 287 BHSW and ever since we got it there's been grease slinging out on the wheel. I called to make an appointment and he said it might be the brakes running too hot.

Can someone confirm? I can adjust them next time I have it in the driveway if it'll save me a trip to the dealer.

Bryan

May be a blown axle seal...

Like TWP, I'd expect the axle seal. Do you feel the axle hubs when making a fuel stop? It's probably a good practice as it can alert you to bad bearings or dragging brakes (hot).

In this case it's on the outside of the wheel so it seems like the cap is not fitting right. I think I would have noticed if the brakes were too hot, but I guess you never know.

Ahh, outside of the wheel. Yes, leaky cap.
still could be a dragging brake but I'd think cap first. Do you have the
E-Z Lube hubs/caps? If so there should be a rubber cap on the end with a zerk behind it.

Could quite possibly be the dust cap. I'd still check the seal while you're there.

Grease On Wheels

We had the same problem with our new 264BHW, and it was ALLEGEDLY from hot brakes. They said my brake controller caused it, charged me for a bearing repack. Bought a new 2016 F-150 and when we had them reset hitch head found out one of the trailer brakes was not properly installed from the factory.

Why wasn't that caught when they repacked the bearings?? I thought you had to remove the brakes to get the drum and all the parts off to do the bearing work. I would EXPECT that they would check the brakes, since it was the cause, according to them. All of the caps were tight, and the EZ-Lubes were dry inside. That's the last time my RV goes to that, selling dealer. In fact, we live 3.5 miles from them, and drove to their other RV center for warranty work. It's just under 60 miles one-way, that tells you that I won't be back at our local shop.

We've already found another TT that we really like, another manufacturer, and this dealer is directly across the highway from our old dealer. Not real happy with Jayco quality, and their dealer sucks.

Spend $30 and get a heat gun. Every stop shoot ur tires and drum thru the rim spoke holes or hub. Remember the shoes are mounted front and back and the front shoes do most stopping and will be hotter than rear shoe. All tires and drums if shot in the same spot will be with in 20 degrees. The heavy side of ur Rv the tires will be a little hotter. Now if one tire or drum is way hotter keep an eye out for problems.

Ya I read all that. Kind of like justifying the blowmax tires on every user running low air pressure. Put a decent seal and bearing in and charge five bucks an axle more and we will all be happy.
