Hauling a canoe while towing

I am considering purchasing a canoe to take camping, but I'd like to get some ideas on how to transport it. I tow a SLX 265RLSW with a Ram 1500 and Husky WD hitch. I'd like to incorporate something that would prevent the canoe from riding on the truck roof. The canoe will weigh approximately 80 lbs. Has anyone bought or made a clamp-on bed rack?

I would consider ladder racks for your Ram 1500

Thanks for the tip. I always thought these bolted on, but one I can clamp is perfect for what I need. I usually have a soft cover on my bed and I can leave it off when hauling the canoe and put it back on.

Yes it does, and no drilling required.

Not sure why the reluctance to use roof racks. I have a Thule roof rack system that I carry three 'yaks on the roof of my RAM. When I was just hauling a single kayak, or my canoe, I used the foam blocks that clip to the side of the canoe and then the canoe is secured with a bow & stern rope. Never had a problem with that system, and it VERY inexpensive.

I just know myself and will be manhandling the canoe onto the rack at times and I don't want to damage my roof when loading by myself.

I use Yakima uprights that use a single bolt to clamp on the bed rail of the truck. Standard round bar goes across and then I use an assortment of accessories depending on which boat I'm taking. The bars are high enough that the boats clear the roof. Get better gas mileage too with the canoe on top.

I use a TracOne from TracRac for hauling our kayak and stand up paddleboard. It clamps on to the bed rails, easy to put on and take off.

I have a 29FBS pulled with an F250 that has a bedcover on it. Put a roof rack on the back roof section of the camper and hauled a 17' Grumman with two 10' kayaks beside it week before last. I put a moving blanket down on the back edge of the roof to protect it, and always carry a retractable ladder, so I can load and unload by myself. When we met up with our friends it was admittedly easier to have them feed the canoe and kayaks to me after I was up top. Works great though. Puts me at 12' 2" clearance.

I'd rather haul it on the truck, it will mostly be the wife and me and I don't see that working well lol. Great idea putting it up there though.
