Hauling a Jay feather x213 with a tacoma

We are thinking about buying the 2017 x213 but we have a 2013 tacoma. Trying to see if anyone else has hauled this trailer with a similar vehicle and how does it handle?

Also, any concerns with the camper?

Welcome to the group "haybell" if you can take a picture of the sticker in the door jamb of your truck that show the trucks weights. The towing gurus here will be able to help you much better with those numbers..

I had a 2007 Tacoma quad cab when I first got the 2015 X213. I towed it a few times w/the Tacoma. The Tacoma had the heavy duty tow pkg and was rated for up to 650 lbs tongue wt and 6,500 lbs towing capacity. I used an Equalizer WDH and Primus brake controller. The X213 was close to max tongue wt before it was loaded for any trips. It still pulled okay but you did know it was back there. I was okay with towing w/ the Tacoma but w/2 growing boys I needed a little more room in the cab so I moved up to an F150. If you watch your weights and take your time you should be fine.

My X213 was at 750 tongue weight with empty water tank, 1/3 in waste tanks, full propane, two batteries, and very little cargo. It'll just go up from there - a 213 doesn't have a lot of good options for lightening the tongue through cargo distribution.. To be honest, I think my F150 a good match but it's right at the limit for payload (1425, which has to include two adults, two kids, and a dog in addition to the tongue of the trailer).

What I'm saying is that I don't think a Tacoma has enough capacity to safely and comfortably tow a 213.

1050 payload won't cut it. Subtract 750 for the trailer, and at least 60 for the hitch (and that could easily be more like 100), and you only have enough capacity for the driver - and he better be thin . No cargo, no other people.

We towed our first year with a Nissan Frontier. Have now upgraded to a Titan. World of difference in the feel. You knew with the Frontier the trailer was back there and it pulled if you were on hills. Now the trailer is a non issue for pulling. So, could we do it with the Frontier - yes...but feel much better with the Titan and extra capacity.
Sadly, I see many trailers being pulled by vehicles that just make me shake my head as they have to be at max or over capacity!

I pull our X20E with my 2012 Tacoma fine. But I wouldn't go much larger and yours is larger. I drove from Ottawa Ontario to Nova Scotia last year and despite some fairly steep climbs, the Taco may have screamed a bit on the big hills, but nothing I would consider to be dangerous to the Engine or My Family. Comes down to your comfort level and with my 10K Equalizer Hitch and Prodigy 3 Controller, I'm comfortable. Would I like more HP's under the hood, Yes, Do I need more HP's under the hood, not really.

I was just reading another thread the other day where a guy was saying that he has a tongue weight of over 1,100lbs with his x213. Most dealers don't have a hitch scale to actually weigh the tongue of the trailer. This is scary considering how much the tongue weight can vary on a trailer.

Long story short, not a good idea.

We tow our X20E with a 1/2 ton PU with V8. I previously towed it with an SUV that was more comparable in specs to your Taco. It was adequate at best. My Sierra pulls it like a dream.

The x213 has a GVWR about 700# more than my X20E. I think you'll find it marginal at best to tow with the Tacoma.

I am pretty new to the TT thing, this is our second summer. This forum has been a gem for helpful information.

Like yourself, I started out with a truck/trailer combo that was nearing capacity. I had a 2014 Ram 1500 Hemi and a 2013 27BH. Towing capacity was around the 80-85% mark, however payload was challenging for me, esp. when I had my dirt bike in the back of the truck when hitched.

The theme you will see is that while you can squeeze in, the level of comfort you are going to have towing is marginalized when you are pre-occupied with what you are trying to make the truck do. There is also a safety element when you are running around at capacity too.

I gave in and got a Ram 3500 with a Cummins (and now I an way over truck'ed ) and the difference in how towing feels is night and day. I am now able to get any TT or 5th I want in the future as the new rig can pull pretty much anything now.

Ultimately, if you can swing it, you are going to be better off with a larger rig to tow your toys.
