Heavy rain leaking through Television Antenna onto hand crank into trailer


We have had this TT for over three years with no leaks. Then today during a hard rain we noticed water running down the television crank and onto the handle then dripping on the floor. Entire amount would fill a shot glass. We have had rain before with no leaks in the past.

Questions:

1. How is the rain getting through the crank?

2. Would any of this rain be able to get into the ceiling area inside the TT?

3. How do I stop it?

1. shaft with seal. Obviously seal is worn or no longer working. That's just one possibility since you say it's coming down the crank handle.
2. Always possible, but you're probably ok at this point.
3. Look on YouTube for rebuilding Winegard antenna, or something along those lines. There used to be some videos showing how they come apart, how to lube or replace seals etc.

Winegard recommends lubing and checking they're antennas twice a season. As said above great how to's on You Tube, look it up Good Luck

I had that exact problem several years ago on my 5th.whl. Only it would only leak down the shaft into the RV and on the floor after every 3rd rain. That was a real puzzler. This all happened in Az. where the rains are infrequent and not real heavy.
The problem ........when the base is installed on the roof there is a small black tube that lays under the base and runs from inside the base to the outside of the seal exiting to the rear of the rig. My tube was plugged when installed by the sealant.
I purchased a new tube and re-installed it. Have not had a problem since.
The job of the tube is to drain the water that comes down the shaft into the base out the tube to the RV roof.
THe tube is the diameter of a spray can tube and about 10" long. I went to a hydraulics shop and bought a tbe that was about 1/16" in dia.
Your drain tube may have just been plugged and can be cleaned out with compressed air.

Have you ever gone up on the roof, and inspected your caulking? This should be done twice a year. The antenna unit has a spot to lube it. Mine has a little rubber cap. If yours is the same type of antenna, maybe the cap deteriorated and/or is now gone.

Also note that the leak maybe coming from some where else completely. My parents had that issue once. The water got in, flowed down some wires, transferred wires where they crossed and came out I think near the antenna. It took them many years to find the issue, as the trailer had to have just the right tilt for them to see the water leak.

I have never and will never use the TV antenna. I wish I could opt out of another hole in the roof that can leak. One more thing to maintain that I will never use...

I did go to YouTube and viewed the video and it was very very simple to take the antenna assembly apart from inside and out. Cleaned all parts and reassemble after lubrication. Funny thing the antenna now goes up and down much better than when first bought. However did note when I had the parts out that IF the roof does leak around the antenna it can easily run into the ceiling and insulation. Did not see any problems when looking. Should rain this Thursday so that will be the test. Again thank you a lot.

On our previous TT, the antenna wire boot on the roof was not sealing and allowed water to leak into the TT. I used plenty of caulk and never had an issue again.

I called winguard a few years ago with the same problem . Their service department sent me a new wavy washer and o ring . Ask how much ? No charge. I told them that I never pulled the required maintance and they said a lot don't and that's why the o ring drys out and breaks
. I know now and lube once a year .
