When we camp in a group(GLamis,Pismo) at least one vehicle is free for emergency use. I tend to be the one to unhitch. I believe the Tundra has a relay in the charge line that cuts out after 5 or so minutes. If we are alone, I will usually unhitch.

Never thought about not unhitching. How the heck do you level the trailer front/back? The slide is supposed to be level to operate too.

If I'm going to stay somewhere a couple of days or more, I'll unhitch. If I'm just overnighting, I usually will not, unless I need to go refuel the truck.

On my Ford, the umbilical cord receptacle is cold once I switch off the truck. Can't accidentally draw down the TV battery if the trailer is left plugged in. Although I usually unplug just in case.

If it just needs a little leveling, I'll put the tongue jack down enough to level. If I need an extreme amount of front to back leveling, I'll unhitch.

If it's out left to right, I'll just put a block under the tire to level it for the night.

What's wrong with pulling the trailer with you in an emergency evacuation situation?

I leave my rig hitched up a lot when I am traveling from job to job. Most of the time is it only an overnight then back on the road after some sleep. Never had an issue. Like some other posters have stated the trailer will draw power from the TV or supply power to the TV if connected to A/C. So I installed a rectifier diode inline with the 12v power from the TV and connected my TV power supply to the camper through a keyswitch relay on the TV. This keeps the trailer from back feeding the TV while its plugged in and the TV from supplying power to the trailer if the TV is not running. It was pretty simple to do and gives me peace of mind that the battery in my truck will still be fine even in I draw the trailer battery down.

We usually stay hitched if it’s an overnight we and we’re heading out early. I’ve also intentionally hitched back up in high wind situations.

Those of you that dry camp at Walmarts or similar locations, do you find it uncomfortable at night?
Do you open the windows and run fans?
It seems like it would be so hot, even at night.

What kind of Ford do you have? I always thought it would drain the battery if we left the umbilical cord plugged in while the truck is off.

Is this an upgraded feature? How did you determine the truck shuts off power?

We only camp at casinos, etc. in cooler weather. Either to save a buck or make it lighter the front window will not open so very little cross draft.

I am thinking about a small 12 volt fan to help with this problem and give us some more latitude in temperatures.

I have a 2017 F250 Lariat and the truck must be running before 12 volt power is applied to the 7 pin connector. This actually stumped our local Ford dealer. Our local RV dealer was familiar with it. How we know is if you remove the battery from the FW and hook the TV to the FW, nothing is powered with the TV not running. If you start and run the TV, then you can operate the jacks, etc. The new trucks have a "smart module".

Ford trucks that have the MaxTow package, and maybe the regular tow package, have a device that only lets electricity flow from the alternator back to the trailer.

Once, the engine is cut off, this device will block any electricity flowing from the battery of the truck to the trailer, even if the umbilical cord is still hooked up.

I've never had any problem when leaving the trailer hooked to the truck. Sometimes I'll leave it plugged in when stopping just for the night. Sometimes I will unplug the trailer.

My excursion is the same way. Turn truck off no power to trailer, start truck and power goes to the battery.
