Hot water tank

OK really dumb question, but how do you tell when the hot water tank is full before turning on to heat up? I cannot believe I am asking this but just being cautious. Thanks

First I turn on the water pump and listen for the noise of water going into the hot water tank. Then I open a hot water faucet and let it run until the sputtering stops...then it is full.

The only dumb question is the unasked question. When I'm purging the system....I bleed out the hot water side first. You'll know you are good when the gurgling in the HWH stops and the air bleeds fully out the spigot. If you DONT hear gurgling....check the valves to be sure the heater isn't bypassed.

There are two ways that I know.

1st check the bypass valves and ensure that they are open and turn on a hot water facets until all the air is out of the line, it can take a few minute to fill the tank.
2nd from the outside access open the pressure relief valve and do not close it until water starts pouring out of the valve.

Once I have flow confirmed in the spring, I always just open a facet until water comes out.

I agree, I like popping the pressure relief valve, other than that, all the aforementioned methods work well.

Rookie needs tutoring

Pristine 2005 Greyhawk. Owner's manual not much help. Need veteran "peeps". Here goes......Fulltime living in it since April at parks w/showers. Heated water in a pot for the few dishes I do. But? I want to start using my shower. I need, step-by-step "how to" do that. Tank heater is on. I run hot water for dishes or washing up in b.r., but, it only stays hot for a few seconds, then, goes cold. What am I doing wrong or, not doing right? Don't want that to happen in a shower. BRRRRRRRRR!!!!! (Warning: If you reply, I might become a real pain in the ass!)

It is going to be your bypass valves. I don't have the illustration but some of this crew has some great pictures.
here is another thread that covers the problem
http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f4...6-a-31161.html. Hope this is good advice

One more time. DO NOT open the pressure relief valve to check to see if the water tank is full. An air column is necessary in the water heater for expansion when the water gets hot. Without this air column when the water heats up and expands, your pressure relief valve will open and begin to drip. Many pressure relief valves are replaced because they drip when actually the only problem is there is no air column for expansion.
