Inline water filter life?

I'm curious how long you can use one of those blue inline water filter. It says to replace every 3 months - but is this three months of continuous use or three months even if I only used it a week or two of camping. If I decide to keep using it and there's no water flow problems with it should I sanitize it with some bleach? Just curious what other campers do with theirs.

I buy a twin pack for the first trip of the year, which is New Years for us. I then use it until our big Summer trip in the end of July, which is when I start using the other one. So basically I use it 4-5 night trip over New Years, 4-5 night trip at spring break, and maybe 1-2 weekend trips. Weekend trips don't always have hookups. The second filter runs 7-10 nights in July, 4-5 over Thanksgiving and then a couple weekends. Probably could use it longer, but they start looking gross.

Let me start by saying we don't drink the water. We carry bottled water for drinking. We only shower and brush teeth with water from the campground spigot. I connect in this order: spigot-regulator-hose-filter-trailer city water connection. I put a little bleach in the hose before connecting it to the regulator every trip so the filter gets a little cleaning. With that use I use one per season. I keep the filter in the fridge when not camping also which helps.

Bad approach.

Eventually the filter will become counter-productive and will contaminate the water instead of improving it.

I change mine every season.

I use the water from the campground and my fresh water tank just as I would use water at home. I do keep the water system properly maintained.

One per season. And put the old one on your hose at home to reduce water spotting when you wash the car.

What is the purpose of keeping it in the fridg? We haven't used one yet but have but thinking about it.

It's my understanding that it's a way to inhibit mold growth.

That's like asking , " How long does a roll of TP last?" Each condition can vary.

I change the element in mine several times a year. Depending on the water source and other factors.

These are all KDF filters. The KDF prevents bacteria from growing.

If you look at the chart on the left side of the page here, it shows several different model numbers for these. News to me cuz I always thought that the blue filters were all the same.

It’s hard to say how long one will last. A lot depends on water quality input. I have noticed all filters say change every three months, even the ones I use in the house. I do not change every three months, I go by pressure drop, when the flow seems to be decreasing I change the filters.

Change the cartridge every season. I take the cartridge out of mine after each use and place it in the kitchen sink. It can drain and dry out there, cutting down on the chance of bacteria growing in the media. It's dark in the fridge, which contributes to mold and bacteria growing, IMO.

And I, too, add a little bleach to the hose each time I hook up. It sanitizes the hose (water sits in it for long periods), and sanitizes the filter and pressure regulator.

I used to travel lots internationally to countries where even in the best hotels, water quality was questionable. I never got Delhi-belly because (in regards to water) I followed the advice of: ALWAYS brush teeth with sealed bottled water, DON'T open your mouth in the shower, and first boil any non-bottled water you may drink and/or sanitize utensils you may be using. Extrapolated to camping: we always take some bottled water, when dry camping we boil water for washing dishes, and when we have hook-ups we use an in-line water filter (making sure it is within it's life).

Good suggestions Hattie. The old travel advice of "don't drink the water in Mexico" applies to travel in the US as well.

Ever wonder why travelers get sick and not the locals? It's not the water itself that has bad germs in it. It's that your stomach doesn't have the bacteria and enzymes to deal with what you are not used to. The locals are used to it. I've gotten sick in my own state by drinking well water that my stomach was not used to. Two days in the camper with diarrhea while everyone else was out having fun. Never again, we now buy bottled water. A gallon of drinking water cost next to nothing.

We replace the outside filter before the first trip of each season. They're fairly inexpensive, all things considered. We also have a tap-mounted Brita filter we use for drinking, so any water we consume is basically filtered twice. It gets replaced at the beginning of the season as well. The water at the campgrounds we go to is safe, but lots of minerals and sediment.
