Installing a ladder
So, I'm the proud owner of a 2014 Jayco 198RD. We have already been on 3 camping trips and love it. So here's my question.
My TT did not come with a ladder on the rear. I definitely want one and am more than capable of installing it myself. Has anyone here ever done so?
My concern would be screwing into studs I would think? The last thing I want is to screw something up. No pun intended. Or would it be better to just let the dealership do it? Just trying to save a buck.
Thanks in advance.

I would contact Jayco directly (have VIN handy) and see if the TT was prepped for a ladder, the studs may already be in the proper locations.

That makes sense. Can most trailer roofs support someone on them?

I can walk on mine although I do not like doing it too much...you hear the occasion crackling sound. I don't like that too much. I just use my step ladder from the side to clean.

My TT came with a ladder and I avoid using it unless absolutely necessary. I to often have seen these attached ladders when used often compromising (loosening/letting moisture in, etc.) the screws at the mounting points.
IMO it's safer, easier to climb, and work from a ladder firmly planted on the ground. I carry a multi purpose ladder in my truck when camping.

agreed. Although with my limited cargo capacity I can't carry a ladder for roof access while camping I can go look for someone like Rustic and borrow his .

I added a ladder to a previous TT. It was easy. That said, there was a reason there was no ladder to start - roof not really suitable for walking. I could hear it cracking underfoot.
If you do add , be sure to lay out a plank to walk on to distribute your weight

Welcome to it! On occasion when I have it out at the campsite I do get fellow campers coming over asking to borrow it (clean debris off slides, replace marker bulbs, etc).

Hitch Pin,
..... I have one of these 13 footers when fully opened/extended..., when fully collapsed/folded up it takes up very little space in the corner of the truck bed:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Werner-13...T-13/100658842
I got mine a few years back on sale for under $70, and use it around the house as well.

Thanks, there has been many times that I would have loved to had a ladder when out camping. I will try to get one before next spring.

Thanks for the input guys! Lots of good stuff. I'm thinking of going with a telescoping, multi-position ladder instead. That way, I can use it to clean off the camper or make minor repairs and also around the house whenever needed.

Does anyone know if it's ok to lean a ladder against the trailer to get on the roof?

And don't do what I did when I wash the roof, wear rubber boots with all that soap.
That was fun.

I have a telescoping ladder. Cut a couple 8" section of a pool noodle and slit the on one side so I slip it on the verticals section of the ladder where it will rub against the TT.
I'm sure many will say its a bad idea, but I am taking my chances.

I didn't mean to lean it against the siding of the trailer, what I meant was leaning it against the top where the side and the roof meet in other words on the gutter.

I try to avoid it, but when it's necessary I place a folded towel against the area the ladder contacts the TT roof/side wall joint to avoid denting the gutter rail and/or having direct ladder contact with the rubber roofing material.
