well, I got it working yesterday but found it very slow with Verizon 3G. I plan to head to a local restaurant where I know I can get 4G to test again.

I finally made time to test Tether with Verizon's LTE (4G) service. It worked pretty well, ping of 137 ms, 7.35 Mbps down, and 1.15 Mbps up. I have to remember to turn the "Auto Lock" feature off on the iPhone, otherwise the phone locks in the middle of an internet session. So far, so good!

Re: Internet connection on the road
Sounds like a pretty good speed! Now if I only camped where there was 4G coverage....

I tried a NetZero 4G Hotspot. Don't bother with it. Coverage only works in major cities. At least I was able to cancel without a contract.

I have traveled to a lot of remote areas, including Alaska, and have found Verizon to have the best coverage, period, of any of the major carriers. Having said that, though, I'm sure there are many many likely camping areas that will not have any sort of coverage. ...

We use the Mobile Hot Spot from Time Warner. it's secure with our private password. I pay $50 a month for it, but it's unlimited, so DW and I can play on the Internet all night and not have to worry about overage charges.

Bob,
How is the coverage area? I never thought of Time Warner.
I just received my Mifi Hotspot from Verizon yesterday.
I cost me $50 for 4GB. DW used it most of the day yesterday and she used .456GB.
When we're traveling, we won't spend as much time on the internet, but I was hoping to use this at home and cancel my DSL.
Unlimited would be nice if the coverage was equal.

I just found their coverage map. Most limited coverage I have seen :-(
