Is it safe to stand on roof?

1987 Jayco 2350.

I want to replace the roof seal soon. Is it structurally safe to stand (200lb man) on the roof? I would think not.

If its a travel trailer, should be good to 350 lbs

Provided the roof has experienced no leaks weakening its structural integrity.

If it were me I'd probably find a way to do a thorough inspection without walking if at all possible. Would be a hell of a way to find you had some water damage with a poorly placed step. I may be over cautious compared to most. But I'd rather find anything in need of repair in a lighter method than walking on it. I'm about 230 and while the roof should hold me my trust diminishes with age. (Both my age and the RVs.)

I'm confused. I thought the roofs were safe to walk on. How do you put covers on or roof maintenance if you don't?

Kind of the opinion I've always had. If you have to change an AC gasket, clean AC coils, change or reseal vents, you have to walk on it. You just have to be a little more careful on some rigs. I'm 225 or so, the roof flexes when I walk on it, but I attempt to stay on the trusses when possible. I haven't damaged or fell through a roof in 14+ years and 8 rigs doing this, knock on wood.

When they assembled your rig, there was probably 2-3 guys on it trampling around installing stuff. They had to. Food for thought.

I'm assuming at 30 years old that the owner of the RV now doesn't know for 100% the history of the RV. I walk on newer roofs without reservation but the further pst a decade it gets the more weary I get.

I can say with confidence that this TT never experienced any roof or floor leaks. That being said it is still 30 years old and possibly brittle. If I stand on the roof and fall through, the TT has to go to the junk yard. Just trying to be cautious. However it sounds that it is generally safe. I'll be careful and test it out.

We brought our TT home on the 14th. I hadn't been on the roof yet and yesterday I decided I wanted to check it out. I have to tell you, it scared the crap out of me. I'm about 6'1" and 255lbs and this "Magnum truss roof" flexed waaaay more than my last trailer that was 10 years old. I know it was the plywood and not the trusses flexing but it was still unnerving. I will mostly likely end up making a carpeted 2x6 plank to distribute my weight onto multiple trusses. I went with Jayco because of all the praise and the 2 year warranty. I have to say so far, I am not impressed.

Probably. The reality is that not all of them are. I know that Jayco Jayfeathers are certified walkable. But I will tell you that the front section of mine flexes a bit so I will not stand on it. Crawl yes.

My dad has a '77 Jayco. 21'. No idea what the model is. But his roof is very sturdy. No trouble walking on it.

I had a Work and Play with a thin aluminum roof which I was not comfortable walking on. When I had to go on the the roof I would take two pieces of plywood to help spread the weight. I would stand on one and move the other to my next area.

I'm 6' and about 220# and my 2017 Eagle roof flexes quite a bit when walking on it. The first time up there to clean the roof, I was somewhat surprised at just how much it actually flexed.

X2, except I have a 2012 Jayfeather HTT. There is always a risk with a 30 year old trailer. With replacing the AC seal I would put something down under where the AC will be temporarily placed just to protect the thin roof membrane from damage.

When I go up on my roof, I put down the stabilizers. I lean an extension ladder up the back of the htt, I place a couple old rags, between the ladder and the roof, (I tore the membrane the first time I went up). I remove any sharp objects like keys, check my shoes for larger rocks, etc.

On my HTT, you can tell exactly where the trusses are located by the feel of the roof.

My Ssn and I have both been on the roof at the same time.

If you are worried you could also use some 3/4" plywood on the roof to help spread out the weight.

Thanks everyone for the advices and inputs. I think I'll take one of the suggestion to prep some 2x6's wrapped in carpet. I'll lay them across the short sides to distribute the weight.

At 180 lbs, I can certainly feel the 'magnum truss roof' flex on my 2016 Jay Flight when I'm up there. It's a bit scary and unsettling. The roof gets a bit slick when wet while washing it. I'm more afraid of slipping off than falling through.

In contrast, my 2005 Sunnybrook Solanta with an all aluminum frame felt rock solid when I went up there.

I just wished they'd use thicker plywood. Heck my 07 mobile scout / sunnybrook had 1/2" marine grade plywood on the roof. Those were built like tanks, just as jloco's solanta. I believe the jay flight is 3/8" osb. Mine has made a few cracking sounds.

I weigh 250 and walk on the roof. We do put all the jacks down first and level. Its helps the camper not wobble as much!

If jayco installed a ladder on it, I'm running with it being walkable.

I wouldn't walk on top of the slide out though. I heard something snap last year, and it gave me IBS for a few minutes.

I'm a svelte 260#, and my son weighs in a bit less, at about 155#. Both of us were up there installing my pair of 150W solar panels.....
