Jay Flight 6 gallon water heater

Looked at 2016 Jay Flight with 6 gallon hot water heater. My first camper several years ago had a 6 gallon heater and we got by with it but did have concerns. Since then we've had doing but 10 gallon tanks.

Are the new 6 gallon heater better than the old heaters or should I keep looking?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Drew

The difference we noticed, was the newer ones that allow 110 volt, and propane systems to run together, does heat the water quicker, so it's possible for DW and me to take consecutive showers, without someone getting the cold end of the stick. Ours is an Atwood in a 2012, and not sure about other brands. Some others will chime in with better experience.

They work fairly well. We are a family of 5 and had no issue with the 6 gal. Not like at home with the demand water heater but adequate for a shower and hair wash or running a tub for one of the kids. They recover quickly as well so not like you have to wait long if the water starts to get cool.

Like many things it depends a lot on your type of use and preference.

Did your previous camper have a water heater that could use both propane and electric? We had an older class B MH that had an electric only water heater. That one was slow. Jay Flights can use both which would speed it up, if needed.

We haven't had an issue using ours on either electric, in full hookup sites, or propane when boondocking. But there's only 2 of us (usually) and we do the 'water on/water off' type showers.

We just had the Girard tankless water heater replaced with a Suburban 6-gallon tank model. On our first outing I was curious as to how well six gallons would hold up and was pleasantly surprised.

We were off the grid so each night I'd switch on the LP heater. It would turn off in 20-22 minutes. Then my wife and I would take back-to-back Navy showers. I was surprised that the LP burner never reignited during either shower, so we had plenty of hot water. Now it may be a different experience if you have full hookups and take long showers.

We have always had 6 gal. until the latest rig with a 10 gal. Both met our needs but the larger one just makes it easier.

Strange as it may seem, we had a 10 gal. Suburban prior to the present 6 gal. Atwood. We occasionally ran out of hot water with the suburban. Never have with the smaller Atwood. Two differences that was evident was the Atwood had a substantially higher thermostat, hence hotter water and the electric element drew more current which would lead you to believe that the element was bigger. Neither unit caused any problems. I was expecting to be short of hot water with the Atwood which never happens!

Family of 5 here. No issues with the AW 6. Have had 10's and 12's before. 3 kids bathe with electric only, then I'll kick on the propane too for the last 2 showers. We never run out.

What is the 'quick recovery' rate of the new Atwood 6 vs the 10?
I know the Atwood 10 has a QRR of 18 gallons per hour. This makes a difference in the recovery time.

If memory serves me right, the 6 gal Atwood has the same 18 gal. recovery rate with both propane and electric in use.

We've had both. And we both like long showers. We got by with the sixer, but the ten is way better for our needs.
