JayFlight 28BHBE and new tow vehicle

HI All! We have a 2015 JayFlight BHBE and absolutely love it. We currently are towing it the a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500. We are planning on upgrading our truck since recently realizing we are overweight for our truck. We drove a 2015 F350 crew cab yesterday. We are just thinking it is more truck than we need. Also how is the gas mileage? The F350 aren't rated with gas mileage so we care wondering. We did drive a GMC 2500. We are not loyal to any particular brand, but just want the best vehicle for towing and daily use. It will also be the vehicle my husband drives daily. Any thoughts on this are really appreciated!

Thanks,
Tricia

Congrats on the BHBE Tricia. We love ours.

You may be able to get a good price on a 2015/2016 F250/F350's now with the new aluminum bodied 2017's coming out soon. As for using as a daily driver use as well, you might to have a look at the 2016 F150's if you can find one with the Max Tow and preferably Heavy Duty Payload Packages. These packages have features that increase the towing and payload capacities of the F150 by about 30% which will give you enough extra capacity for whatever you load in the truck or trailer. If you are reading reviews keep in mind that there is big difference between a tow package on the F150 and the Max Tow and the Heavy Duty Payload package on the F150's.

Congrats on the trailer. Looking towards a 2500/250 is probably a good idea. I prefer the GMC, but you would be fine with any of the HD trucks.

A few threads on here with that trailer and what the owners tow with. I think most would opt for a 2500/250.

We are also thinking that a Ram 1500 with the 3.92 axel ratio would work too. Right now we have the 3.55 axel ratio. Any thoughts?

I'd be leaning towards at least a 3/4 ton. We have the same rig, and though we've been accustomed to towing a lot bigger rigs, I won't go any less than what I have. It's a daily driver as well. Fuel mileage depends on how you drive it. Can get 15-20 unloaded, 9-12 loaded. The 28BHBE is not a light rig by any means. I think you'll find pricing between 1/2 and 3/4 tons very close (unless diesel), but you'll get much more peace of mind going with the 3/4 minimum.

Congrats on the BHBE! We LOVE ours!

I'm partial to the RAM HD trucks with the 6.4 Hemi. If you can afford diesel, go for it, but IMO the 6.4 is a pretty formidable motor, and I like mine. I got the 3.73, but if I had it to do over again and could get the deal I got on my truck, I would go with the 4.10. I just couldn't find a Ford or GM for what I was able to get on my RAM when considering features and value.

Truly any of the big 3 are great trucks IMO.

I don't know if you were talking diesel or gasser, but I love driving my F350 diesel 4x4 as a daily driver.
I get 15 mpg.
And not much less towing 13500 lbs

What is the payload on that ram? I believe the 1500 rams have a coil rear end which may not be up to the weight of that trailer. Really I wouldn't consider any 1500/150 for a trailer that size but not saying you can't make it work...

Tricia,

I don't think I've ever heard any camper say "I wish I had a smaller tow vehicle."

With an F350 you would have a tow vehicle if and when you decided to trade up to a larger trailer.

Just food for thought.

Has always been my thoughts. Buy one big enough to tow whatever, pick rig and don't worry. To me the 1 ton drives as good as a 1/2.

My husband is dealing right not on the F-350. Is is a gasser. It is a 2015 with 17,000 miles on it. Don't think we can afford new. Meanwhile he is receiving calls from the dealerships about the GMC 2500 gasser we drove and a Ram 2500 diesel he drove. Any opinions on which would be our best option? Trying to think about gas mileage as well as it also being his daily use vehicle. We have pretty much ruled out any 1500. It is just hard because is loves his RAM 1500. I really appreciate all of the help you all of giving us!

Your not going to get very good mileage towing with a gasser.
If those three are your choices I'd go the Ram diesel hands down

I had a 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew with the Hemi, and traded in last fall for a 2015 Ram 3500 Laramie Crew Diesel, for the same reasons you are looking at upgrading.

Obviously the capacities of the new truck are significantly greater than the half ton. My goal was to only have to upgrade trucks once, now I can basically get into any TT or 5th in the future without any vehicle concerns. It is a bit overkill for my 26BH, but I'm fine with that.

I actually get better mileage in the 3500 than the 1500 - both on the highway and city. In the city with my Hemi, I'd get around 19-20L/100kms. In the Cummins, I am getting pretty consistent 17L/100kms under the same driving conditions and routes.

That being said, I didn't make this change with fuel economy as a factor in my decision, but it was a nice surprise.

Of the big three, I liked the fit/finish of the interior of the Ram more so than the others, and I like the reliability of the Cummins. Simple motor, makes tons of power and seems to have good longevity from what I've read.

That being said, those are all personal reasons. All three american manufacturers make a beautiful truck at the Lariat/Laramie/Denali trim level, and they all have unique style that makes them appealing to us. Hell, I'd be happy in any of them!

+1

ETA: I guess it also depends on the commute. Mine is really short, so a diesel wouldn't be a good fit as a daily driver for me (one of the reasons I went with a gasser). But for a longer commute, where you can get the motor up to temp, it would be a fine daily driver with good fuel economy towing and empty. And I really like the Cummins.

There is endless discussion about the capabilities of the 150/1500s, and virtually no such questioning about 3/4 and 1 tons. In my mind that should be answer enough for those trying to decide.

The OP was talking about 9% tongue weight apparently as a good thing and wasn't adjusting max TW with use of a WDH. That suggests he is where I was years ago as a newbie, so he should not be looking to work at the margins and should just go with a larger TV if that is within his range.

We pulled our 4400# HTT with a Ford Exprdition with the 5.4 gas and I saw mpg pretty reliably in the 9's. The 350 6.7 diesel pulls our 12700# 5th giving us mpg in the 12's. A diesel will tack some extra $$$ on the price but will pull like nobody's business.

I would go with the Ram diesel. The F350 is a very dated platform and the Ram will outperform the Ford in just about every aspect. Last month I made the switch from an F150 Ecoboost to a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins and will never go back to a Ford.

I have a Ram 2500 6.4 hemi 4.10. It pulls my 284BHBE (slightly heavier that 28BHBE) very well. I have put on about 700 miles on it towing the trailer mostly flat to hilly so far. A diesel will pull stronger, but I have not been left wanting more so far. It is kind of a pain as a daily driver vs a 1/2 ton, but I only commute to work 10 days a month and parking at work is easy. I always park waaaaay out at the grocery store. I always do with a new vehicle though I get 14 mpg with barely any highway miles... One of the main reasons I wanted a 3/4 ton is that I definitely wanted to be within specs without having to split hairs about what I threw in the back of the truck or in the trailer. I've been getting solid 9-10 mpg towing.

Yeah, but maybe that's because they didn't have a 400K engine in a hundred K truck!

Just joking. Not trying to start a "mine's bigger" war!
