Jayflight Light Cover / Bent Tongue Jack

I have a couple of questions n regards to my 2015 Jayflight travel trailer.

(1) There is a cover over the actual light bulb on the light fixtures in the ceiling. How do you get that cover off without breaking it to clean the inside. The one on the bathroom is getting full of stuff and a couple of others have a dead bug or two inside.

(2) My son always wants to help and do stuff, especially with the truck (he is 15 year old now). We were hooking up a few week ago and we were off alignment so he asked to pull the truck forward a foot or two and have me direct him back. Forward worked fine but he did not have his foot on the brake when he shifted into reverse. He ran the truck under the tongue of the trailer and bent the tongue jack.

Is there any hope in trying to straighten it? I can still muscle it up and down a little, but it is far from travelling the distance it should.

Thanks!

I believe the lights on the 2015 slide fore or aft about 1/4" and then can be removed.

For the tongue jack, you might fix it but the best fix is to replace it. There is a lot of weight and a lot of money resting on that jack. If the metal is fatigued from the bend, it will eventually fail.

If you can still muscle it then its only a minor bow..not a major bend. With a picture we could see for sure. But I'm guessing its a small bow. Just hook up to the trailer, crank the jack down to the ground then gently pull forward or reverse, which ever is opposite of the bow. You should be able to put back near perfect.

If you can't straighten the manual jack to your satisfaction, it might be an opportunity to add an electric jack to the X-Mas list

Best thing you can do is use this as an excuse to buy a power tongue jack.. When life gives you lemons make lemonade.

Absolutely +1 It may be a little more money than you wanted to spend right now, but it's well worth it in the long run IMO.

I have one of the cheapo electric jacks now, and I'm just waiting for it to fail so I can get a bigger, better, faster one!

I ordered a manual tongue jack - way less money than the electric that is on their now. My thinking is that I would replace with manual and then be able to determine whether the bent electric can be straightened reliably. If not then I may purchase another electric later and have a replacement part in the manual should I ever need one.

Son said why not get electric now - "Dad, you will get tired of cranking tongue up and down since you are used to electric ..." I said, "No, son, YOU will get tired of cranking tongue up and down - and while you are cranking you will be reminded of how important it is to be careful when you are doing things ..." I got the teenager eye-roll on that comment!

So, I still have a power tongue jack, it is just not an electric one!

Oh, didn't know the existing was electric. When I read "I can still muscle it up and down a little" I took it as a manual.

I understand your move to a manual.

he is 15 driving your truck and it's his fault?

It could have been a lot worse.

Ha ha ha ha! Darn right!

When I was 15 my father allowed me to help him load up the trailer, usually only at our house though. I was also allowed to help set up the trailer at the campground too. I can tell you that I was so excited to help my dad and it truly helped me love camping. Stupid accidents happen. Sounds like Russell5000 is handling a bad situation about as good as he can. Kudos to him for making this a family experience!

He learned a valuable lesson that hopefully he will carry with him for the rest of his life. And cranking that jack will drive that lesson home every time!

We all make mistakes, it's what we learn from them that is the important part.

I can muscle the jack up and town with the crank - blows the fuse right away if I try electric. It is a workout!

Yes, I allowed my son to move the truck while hitching - he asks every time - so all that happened is my responsibility in the end. That is why I am not asking my son to pay for anything. And, yes, you are for darn sure right that it could have been a lot worse - in fact, nobody got hurt, and that is all that really matters when all is said and done.

On the other hand, it is good to learn from our mistakes, and as my son spends time working on the trailer and replacing the tongue jack as well as cranking the tongue jack up and down the reality of actions and consequences will become real to him in a manner that my talking to him cannot convey.

Good judgment comes from experience; experience comes from poor judgment. At least, that is how I have learned the lessons I remember most!

The trailer tongue jack is only three bolts. The trick is to leave it connected to your truck when you remove it. Then you won't have to jack up the trailer tongue with something else before you remove the tongue jack...

If I ever replaced mine I would definitely replace it with an electric one. Kinda neat to just stand there with the remote in your hand.

I hope you looked at the available room for the manual crank to be used. Sometimes its pretty tight on the trailer tongue area especially if you have added more batteries etc...

You may be able to return it to a useable state by attempting to straighten it out. Camping is about teaching our kids....including how to back etc.

RoyBraddy - thanks for the tip on hooking the trailer to the truck. I was planning to take two jack stands and use those, but hooked to the truck will be easier, and I think safer as well.

After we get the current tongue jack off I will take a picture and post and see whether we should try to straighten.

Thanks!!
