Louisville, KY RV parks?
We'll be in the Louisville, KY area in early March and would like to camp there using our travel trailer. However, every online review I've read indicates the sites there are not up to par. The only half decent reviews were written about a place in Shepherdsville, to the south. Anyone have any experiences at campgrounds in those areas? Thanks.

We stayed at the Louisville South KOA campground this June. I would have to rate it as an average park with nothing special to offer. We were simply passing through and needed a place to stop and according to the reviews, it sounded better than the other KOA near Louisville. It was a bit out of our way and the highway down to the park was busy but it seemed to be the best choice in the area.

We also looked for other parks in the general area, but as you've found, reviews aren't great. We ended up at the KOA as for the most part you know what you're getting, and it was only two nights.

Robkelly: Thanks for the comments on the Louisville S. KOA. I did see that that campground was available, and it had its share of bad reviews. But, it's good to have comments from someone who's been there recently. The S. KOA was in Shepherdsville, as I understand it; did you happen to investigate or visit Grandma's CG, also in that city?

If you don't mind being a wee bit outside of Louisville you may consider Charlestown State Park on the sunny side of the river(Indiana). It would be ~15-20 minutes to Louisville, perhaps less if the new bridges get completed by year end as is being reported. We have camped there as it isn't far from us. Full hookup sites are available and the campground is nice. It would get you away from the urban noise of the parks closer in to the city. We may try to get a last trip in there in the next 2-3 weeks since it's full hook up and I can do a good tank flushing prior to the winter. Hope this helps.

We definitely didn't visit Grandma's CG, and I don't remember whether or not I did any investigation on it - all of that was done almost a year ago when we were planning the trip.
Should have mentioned that, unless they've fixed them since our visit, the roads a the KOA S are dirt and in tough shape from water runoff forming gullies. I don't remember it being too bad getting to our site, but had to take is very slow on the way out.

Jenoble99: I started to look at KY state parks but not parks in IN, so I'll give that a try too. Thanks.

We stayed at Charlestown State Park last week. We loved it. Great hiking trails and if you stay make sure you take the tour of Rose Island. It has been closed off from the public for 70 years and was reopened in 2012 for people to visit. We stayed in the full hookup sites.

Topic side track, is Rose Island open again? It was closed earlier in the year for renovations and updates. I want to go check out what all they have done with the Rose Island area post renovation.

Rose Island was open. We took the guided tour, but you could take a self guided tour. Fun fact, on our tour was a 97 year old man who remembers being there as a kid.
