Happy camping!
Stayed a week at the Rafter J back in June. Great place and close to everything. We stayed in the Ranch Camp area, away from the office and swiming pool/playground area. It was well shaded and quite. Be sure and check out the 1880 steam locomotive from Hill City to Keystone. Enjoy your trip, it will be a great trip.

Big Pine Campground is the Greatest!!

So, we made it out there and back. Others had mentioned Big Pine Campground and we were excited to get a reservation for late August/early September. That place is wonderful!! The sites are large, the place is quiet and Ron and Angie are what I wish all campground owners are like. They were always available and helpful. When we came into Custer, we had been dealing with intermittent trailer brake problems. When checking out, the brakes were completely non-functional. They called a place about a mile or so away and got them to look at the issue. If you are planning a visit to the Custer/Keystone area, you really should put Big Pine at the top of your list.
