Need tires
So the Raniers on my 2016 19rd are showing bald on outside and inside edges and also center line. I'm probably headed to Les Schwab tomorrow and was wondering if anyone can advise me please on tires to get? It seems like every time I go tire shopping I do not recognize the brands.
Oh, the Raniers have less than 300 miles :-(
Some things I know I want:
- tires less than 1 year old
- E rated
- metal stems (Add TPMS later)
- balanced
- no Towmax
What else?
Thanks
David

Goodyear Endurance are too new to have much info yet. BUT, a number of us have gone to them. Time (and miles) will tell.

I went the Goodyear Endurance route back in July, since the tires are so new and made in the USA they were only four weeks old which was nice. I have the ST225/75-15 load range E, 2880# at 80 psi.

if your tires have less than 300 miles and are bald, you have problems far more serious than tire brand

Agree. Something is wrong, either with the tires, or axles.

Tire Wear
Being in agreement with everyone else, sounds like you have MAJOR problems with your axles/alignment. Our '16 Rainier's had about 500 miles on them when I changed them out. It wasn't that they were worn, we had a blow-out on one that had about 450 miles on it. There was no confidence with the 3 left on the trailer. It was then that I realized that the tires on the trailer were ABSOLUTE CRAP. The old tires were 50 mph, 51 psi air pressure, and 4 ply pieces of junk.
The new tires are Carlisle's, and I got them from Discount Tire. These tires are 8 ply, 81 mph, and 65# air pressure rated. Of course I got the replacement certificates with them and spent around $440 for 4 new tires. The only problem we had with them was we got 2 nails in one tire, and it developed a slow leak. We had to drive 90 miles south back to Joplin, Mo., to get the leak fixed. It stayed aired up, and it was a cool, rainy day, so I wasn't too worried, as I stopped several times and checked it. That was on our 2000 mile trip in April.
We now have almost 4,000 miles on them, about 3K on the repaired tire, and they haven't lost any air. They look great, ride well, and I drive at 65 & 70, no problem. I've run in 103+ temperature, and the tires never felt like they were running hot, which is the biggest reason tires blow out, next to under-inflation. I project these trailer tires will get about 25,000 miles or better, and if even the repaired tires keep holding up, I'll get another set, and of course, from Discount Tire.
As stated before, if you have worn inside and outside edges, that's a sign of under-inflation. The inner & outer edges will wear also when you make a lot of tight turns and increase suspension wear. Another problem you said was the center was also worn excessively, which shows over-inflation. All of these problems point toward improper inflation. A good air gauge can be found at Wal-Mart for $20. All of my tires, truck & trailer, are less than .5# difference, and that is as important as the right pressure for your trailer loading.
Before I would put on another set of tires, go to your dealer and see what they say. Expect some push back on them getting to you anytime soon. They'll probably want the unit for them to check it out when they will have time for it.
Good luck, and let us see some pictures of these tires, so we can better evaluate what the problem could be....

Dave,
Agree with the others that something may be up with the axle, suspension, or tires themselves.
What load range tire is on the rig now? If it's a C rated tire, the rims may not be able to handle the higher pressure of an E tire. But a D rated tire may be a good match to the rims. There usually is a max weight stamped into the rim on the backside. Match it to the max tire weight.
When it's time to replace the tires on our rig I will be comparing the Carlisle HD's to the GY Endurance. The Carlisle RH and HD (newer version) models have had some great reviews with very few complaints from what I have found. Plus both the GY and HD (RH also) have a higher speed rating for a little more reserve vs traveled speed.
Good luck shopping!!!

Yes sorry. Thank you and the gentlemen above. 3000 miles not 300.
Also, I'm pretty good about keeping the tires at 50PSI

Even at 3000 miles, I'd say you may still have some issues with the axles.
Even with Raniers, it's hard to fathom getting only about 3000 miles if nothing is wrong.

Interesting comments on the Ranier's. I have (4) on my White Hawk 33RSKS and approximately 11,200 miles in 11 months.
I am showing wear on the outside edge on the passenger side only, so I took it to a trailer axle specialist. Just in case.
The answer was, tires are not very good, but "ok". Axles, bushings etc...are just fine. Felt much better at this point.
Looking to change tires this winter (such as it is in GA) and am somewhat stymied between Carlisle, Maxxis & Goodyear. Opinions?
Oh, load range D, ST 225x75 R15.

Our Raniers went over 20,000 with no problems.
We have had Maxxis tires and they are excellent but this time we went with the Goodyear Endurance.
I was a Les Schwab customer for 30 years but when I went to get new tires for my then Ford Exploder Sport Trac and they quoted me a stupid amount of money. Sorry, no more Les Schwab. I have now been buying tires at Discount tire for a few years. Have gotten decent prices and my tires aren't "siped". Les gives you that whether you want it or not and charges for it.

I am considering moving to Goodyear Endurance ST225 /75 R15 117N E1 BSW. But not sure that going from LR D at 65 PSI to LR E and 80 PSI is something my wheels can handle.

If you have the factory aluminum alloys rims, you should not have any issues going to 80psi.
I have the aluminum rims on my 2015 Jayco Eagle and went with the Goodyear Endurance 225/75/15 load range E tires with no problems.

Has anybody installed the solid metal stems on the alloy wheels? I say because as I was checking air pressure in the spare, I noticed the steel wheel spare has a full metal stem (clamp style). Yet, the 4 alloys have a metal/rubber stem.

Can't speak to the rims on a Jayco Eagle, but the rims on my 2017 Jayco 23RB are good only for 65psi. My rims are made by Tredit. I went to their site and found my rim. Jayco had started changing to Goodyear Endurance tires before my trailer was built, so my 23RB came with OEM GY Endurance 205/75R15 LRD tires.

My Maxxis have been great to this point 3yrs, 7K and have a very good service record. Discount Tire direct is how I received mine with free shipping if you can't get locally.
I would also strongly consider the GY's made in the USA now.
Maxxis are Thailand, not China.

Just my .02 but I like my 10 ply Maxxis tires.
Not cheap, but I've been happy so far.

Update!
I did indeed move to the GY Endurance and the 80 PSI. No problems what-so-ever. May be my psychology kicking in, but the WhiteHawk seems to pull much easier and I was able to drop the brake boost from 8.5 to 7.
Also switched to the Equal-I-Zer 1200/12k at the same time and between the two additions, towing is a delight!
