That's what I've been doing as well but just saw this in the Lippert Ground Control 3.0 (5th Wheel) 4 Point and 6 Point Owner's Manual:

the tires of the unit.
1. Extend the inner legs of both landing gear 4-5 inches by pulling on the quick release pins.
Leaving a 4 inch gap between the base and the ground has me dropping the inner legs about a foot. I'm going to try following instructions and see how that works.
