New Camper Has Arrived - No Battery!

We have a question fellow Jayco owners.. Our new 308 RETS just arrived and has been delivered to our campground! Here's the kicker! NO BATTERY! Apparently batteries are an option for TT's and our dealer never said a word that we'd need one.

The dealer did a great job in terms of oriented us with our new summer home. Just no mention of the battery! Since we'll be plugged in, do we really need a battery (keeping in mind if there's a power outage we have no lights)? Also, what size and type of battery should we buy?

Thanks everyone!

Trust me you are better off buying your own. If you are going to be pluged in all the time I would just buy a deep cell marine battery from walmart.

No battery from the dealer- ridiculous! Yes you need a battery, I'd recommend a deep cycle one. There are certain items on your TT that require a battery to operate correctly like the CO2/propane alarm, the brakeaway switch when towing, the ignitor on your fridge if your 120v goes out. Hopefully it was just an oversite on the dealers part.

Thanks Wiscampsin! We figured it's best to have one and I figured a Deep Cycle Marine Battery! Any idea what Group Size?

I would contact the dealer and ask where the battery is. I have never heard of buying a trailer without a battery. In PA it is illegal to tow a trailer 3000 pounds or heavier without a working breakaway switch. You have to have a battery for that to work.

Since you don't plan on towing the camper a group 24 battery will work. You will need to check the water level monthly to make sure it doesn't get low enough to ruin the battery.

I was reading my manual today and it indicates that the battery is customer supplied. I'm picking up our 33RLDS soon so I emailed our salesman and he said not to worry they include a battery in the deal but not all dealers do as it's an option.

RaveOn! You are absolutely right. My wife read where the battery is customer supplied. I'm just a little chapped that the dealer didn't make mention of it other than for towing purposes. We had the dealer deliver our TT to the campground for us.

We towed our boat for many years. tlcdoc, you are right that a battery is needed for the breakaway switch! We'll buy a Marine Deep Cycle Group 24 along with a battery box should do the trick.

Thanks again everyone..

If your trailer is not being towed, a battery is not required.

Sounds like it's parked at a seasonal site with shore power.

You only need a battery for the emergency brakes while towing or if boondocking without shore power.

Relax and enjoy your camper. For you, a battery is just another needless expense ans something you'll have to maintain.

Just my 2 cents......

I think your dealer needs to get you a battery. Most dealers provide this even though in manual it says it's optional.

There is enough markup on a trailer to give you a lousy battery. I would DEMAND a battery. I have NEVER heard of an RV dealership selling a trailer without a battery, new or used!

Even if you are on shore power you still need a battery. If you will always be plugged in an automotive battery will probably do. If you don't have a battery the lights etc will still work but your converter will be working overtime and could get hot enough to fail.

Most RV converters do not require a battery to operate.

Picked up our new 308 last Friday, no batteries but it was discussed when we ordered that we would keep the batteries and boxes from our old unit. I was happy to see a spot for a second battery box on the tongue, the 266 SL on the lot we had seen only had provision for one battery on it

That is interesting that some dealers don't supply a battery nor give you an option to purchase one from them at time of sale.

I posted on the FaceBook page what came with ours, but I don't have a clue about group.

I am glad that everything else is working and that you are happy with the trailer.
Will you be camping in it soon? We go again this weekend.

I have purchased 2 new rigs and one used one from 2 different dealers. All came with new batteries. My Jayco has 2 batteries. Never any question about providing them.

That's like buying a new car only to find out that the tires are optional.

That's as bad as not including a propane tank cover.

But if you don't drive the car, what difference does it make if it's on tires or on blocks.

That's the issue to me in the OP's question.
