New LR D Tires: Kenda vs. Taskmaster?

Our 2017 White Hawk came with Rainier tires, ST205/75R14 Load Range C, speed rated to 75 mph (but I wouldn't run at that speed for any distance). They were okay for our first season and have about 1,800 miles on them (to include mileage from factory delivery). But really, they're a pretty low grade tire. I'd been thinking about upgrading to Maxxis M8008s this spring, but if I'm going to upgrade I think a higher load range would be better.

Without moving up to a 15" wheel (I'd prefer not to), LR D options are limited. I'm considering two tires. First - Kenda Karriers, which seem highly rated by owners. They're much stiffer, inflate to 65 psi vs. 50 psi of the Rainier, are 8-ply instead of 6-ply, weigh 22 lbs and have a much higher load capacity (2,040 lbs vs. 1,760 lbs of the Rainier). I've found them for a great price here. Speed rating is 65 mph.

I'm also considering the Taskmaster Provider ST215/R14 LR D. It's another well-rated tire, similar specs, slightly larger and heavier at 26 lbs, but will also fit my existing wheels. It has a load capacity of 2,200 lbs at 65 psi and a speed rating of 81 mph. It's a little pricier than the Kendas, but saving $15 per tire means nothing to me - I just want the safest tires I can put on my 14" rims.

I'm not looking to overload our trailer or speed (other than passing I do a steady 55-60 mph). I just want to increase safety and tow handling with stronger, stiffer, cooler running tires. Does anyone have actual experience with either tire? Any recommendations on these or other potential replacement tires? Thanks in advance.

Having blown a Ranier tire and ruined an aluminum wheel on ours after not many miles or months, I changed to LRD tires without going to 15" wheels. Tirebuyer.com had Carlisle Radial Trail HDs for $67.99 each while Discount tire had the same for $102.00 each. I was pleasantly surprised when Discount tire honored the lower price. I got 5 of them mounted and balanced with road hazard and metal stems for $501.00. So far the Carlisle tires are getting good reviews and also have the 81 mph speed rating. Not the brands you mentioned but might be a good alternative for you.

I still have the Rainer tires on my 264BHW, two seasons done w/o any issues at all, but keeping close eye on them also (about 5k miles). I may change tires this coming season, would like to go with one of those tires noted here, but wonder if the steel rims will handle the higher tire pressure, I haven't looked at the rims yet for identification regarding the pressure ratings.

Thanks, I'll check out the Carlisles as well. Have you towed much with them? Impressions?

I've towed about 500 miles since I put them on and they still look new. It would be hard to say they tow better or anything like that but my confidence level is higher. I'm a pilot and pretty careful about pre-flight... er... -trip inspections, air pressure, and maintenance. Only time will tell. I have a 450 mile round trip coming up after my jury duty. I think I made the right decision, but only time will tell. I absolutely hate being on the side of the road...

I hear you. 21-year Army veteran here. Pre-combat... er... -trip inspections are in my DNA...

Thanks for the info.

The biggest difference that you'll notice switching up a load range is the sidewall stiffness. I just upgraded from a "d" to an "e" rated tire for our Eagle and went with the Kenda Karrier. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to tow with them yet. I ordered mine from here Trailer Tires and Wheels - Steel & Aluminum Trailer Wheels, Bias & Radial Trailer Tires which is where yours will come from. Took about a week. The only bad thing about them was the date code was from last Feb. so they'll be a year old before they hit the trail. That's ok though as their stored inside.

Decided to get Goodyear Endurance instead

So...I just went with the new Goodyear Endurance instead. They don't have much performance history but based upon specs and the fact that they're made in the USA by Goodyear in an effort to grab market share from Chinese manufacturers, I'm betting that they're not junk. Of course, the reports that Jayco is making them standard equipment gives me pause...these are the same people that offered Sway Command as an option...

Anyway, if you've been thinking about purchasing these, now might be a good time. Discount Tire Direct has them for $109 ea. With no tax/free shipping PLUS a $50 discount AND a $70 Visa Gift Card rebate if ordered before 1 April, my cost for five tires was $85 ea., cheaper than the Chinese tires I was considering. I'll share impressions of the Goodyear tires once installed.

I am considering same move and looking for 205/75R14 LR D so very interested in everyone's final decisions and impressions.

So far I am leaning Taskmaster but Goodyear made in USA has given me pause to see if there is any feedback good or bad.

Our 27DSRL came with Taskmaster Provider tires. 205/75r14 load range C. 50 psi and rated for 81mph. We only have about 500 miles on them since taking delivery but they seem to do well. From what I've gleaned, Taskmaster seems to be a good brand for what it's worth.

I definitely was conflicted...the Provider has such a solid performance history. Hopefully my fellow citizens won't let me down with the Goodyear!

I know I am definitely looking forward to some GY Endurance reviews. It's either those or the newer Carlisle HD's for our 32.

FYI, another hopeful GY Endurance owner here. I will say this, if you check the dates, you'll see those tires are FRESH!

I upgraded from Kenda C to Kenda D on a previous unit, and they did hold up much better. I am going to upgrade next season; I will be interested to know about these new US made Goodyear ST tires. If I am not sure about them by next spring, I will likely go with the Kenda D load. We currently have the same stock Rainier C tire. We have about 2,500 on them; they are wearing a bit fast, but they are wearing evenly (at least). To be sure, I constantly monitor my tires and brakes; they all pretty much junk or at least inherently suspect.
