New trailer for two bone heads

Aloha all, We recently purchased a 2014 Jay Flight 198rd and we are trying to get familiar with the little devil. We finally plugged it in to a shore line and everything worked....except the lights. When we plugged in the battery, they worked but we can't figure out what the **** we are doing/missing??? HELP!? Thanks!

Plugged in the battery? If your speaking of the battery on the trailer then, that is the issue. Your shore power will power your outlets, MW, Electric water heater, AC but your lights run on 12 volts. The shore power will charge your batteries but, the battery needs to be connected for them to work. Also fan on heater works on battery, along with other devices

Good Luck and congratulations !

Smile I told you we were boneheads :)

Thanks so much! We bought this cutie used (once), so we are flying blind here. Very scary for us. We are working like crazy to do a shakedown and head for the Pacific Northwest. Just seems to be one thing after another

Welcome to the wonderful world of RV!

Just when you think everything has been replaced, repaired or patched... Something else decides to go wrong.

We camp through the misery. And laugh about it afterwards!

Well, if you are coming up here to the Pac. NW, remember to bring your sunscreen (I can't believe I said that)! Hottest June on record and forecast is for HOT through 4th of July.

The battery does not need to be connected for the 12V systems to work. There is going be another problem that has not been found as yet. Check the two 30 amp fuses in the converter. One of them may be blown. This would account for the lights only working when the battery is connected. In the current state the battery is not being charged. It is also possible the converter itself may be bad. Maybe even as simple as the circuit breaker feeding it has tripped.

This is what I was thinking. My 12V systems work with or without the battery if I'm connected to shore power.

And to the OP, I wouldn't worry about that bone in your head, we all get one now and then. It's just a good thing there's plenty of "bone saws" on this forum, you just have to be okay with the ribbing!

I have asked a lot of goofy questions and the kind folks here have always kept me out of trouble. Greetings also from the Pacific Northwest. They used to say we never tanned, just rusted but this week any sunburns/tans are legit.

If you go to Jayco.com you can download the manual for your trailer. We have ours on our tablets in case we need it in a pinch (the actual manual lives in the trailer).
