Those Skylarks have to be a completely different towing experience.That is great mileage for that vehicle while towing. Love that v-nose.

Gas here is about $3.75. My buddy pulls an 8,ooo lb 5er, with a gas burner, and gets about 8 M.P.G. Lets say 24 gallons of gas till you need a gas station. That would equal 192 miles traveled and $90.00 to fill tank. My diesel would use 16 gallons and cost $64.00 to fill. The price of diesel off sets nothing.

Another diesel here too. 2011 F250 pulling 9000 fully loaded for a week long trip. At the current prices, we have figured out that we will save about $500.00 on the 2000 mile trip we will be taking this summer. Diesel fuel is higher per gallon, but with the significantly better fuel economy the diesel provides, it comes out cheaper in the end. Of course, if you factor in the initial cost of the diesel equipped vehicle vs. gas, it will take longer to off-set the cost.

There are other costs associated with owning a diesel. Oil changes take 3 gallons of oil vs 1.5 gal for a gas truck. Fuel filters for a diesel every other oil change vs one every 50k miles. Filters, air and oil cost more. Higher initial cost. The cost of driving an empty truck every day driving most gas trucks will get around 16mpg. Driving an empty diesel truck for around town and some hiway probably around 18mpg.

I like my diesel but they are not for everyone.

Owning a diesel is definately more expensive. But, IMO, the pros far outweigh the cons. You're right, diesels aren't for everyone. Fortunately, I don't drive mine everyday, my little 98 Camry has that task. The truck is for towing or runs to the local home improvement warehouse.

Seann, I usually go about 20K miles. The owners manual says every other oil change. Geno's Garage, an online diesel parts supplier, sells filters in kits. Two oil filters and one fuel filter for $xxx price. Some people follow the factory recommended schedule.

Ten seems to be the common number. It is all about drag. My truck got 13 mpg pulling 80 bales of hay on a flat bed plus about 15 or so in the bed, nearly 8000# including the trailer. I got ten, maybe 11, pulling my toy hauler with as little as 5500# without toys. Diesels are great for longevity but aren't much help as far as economy. First, they cost thousands more than gas engines. And somewhere around 1980 the price increased from below regular gas to 40 cents higher than regular. A ripoff, as it's cheaper to produce, but that's another story.

We just bought our 31 BHS and towing it home, we got about 7.5 MPG. This is 6850 dry weight being pulled by a 2001 Suburban 5.3L 4x4 which was getting 12 MPG to begin with. Looking into upgrading to 4.10 gears and replacing the air shocks, but over all was very nice to pull! Was first time in over 20+ years towing a TT, and was only 89 miles, but I thank the guy at the RV parts house for talking me into spending the money to get a WDH with sway bars...pulled like a dream, even going head on against big rigs!!!

I'll be looking for your mpg. We began towing our 9000# Eagle Tuesday, have driven 325 miles and are averaging 9 at 60 with our 7.3 diesel. The week before we averaged 17 driving 3000 miles, Colorado to Maryland and back to Davenport. The problem is drag due to the 12' height. The solution is to find a low clearance underpass.

When traveling distances, we use the interstates and (other than Cali where cars/trailers are restricted to 55) we drive 65mph max. Our mpg stays consistent at 9mpg. Haven't gone faster than 65, so can't tell ya what the mpg does there

Ditto Crabman and tafische. Just accept it, mileage sucks when towing. We got 10 to 11 with our big diesel towing our former TT at just 6000#, and we brought this new one, about 9000#, 975 miles home last week and got 9 mpg. And the week before last we drove that truck 2000 miles and averaged 17 mpg not towing. My guess is the lower mileage with the new TT is more due to its being a foot taller than weighing more. My personal opinion is that the real advantage to pulling with a diesel is they're made to work hard, less so on the fuel economy. And at 40 cents a gallon more than unleaded, any advantage in mileage is given back in cost. But there's no reason this engine won't go 300k.

My last trip I kept it at 60 MAX and let my GPS calculate mileage.. 13.11 mpg Going from SoCal to Sask Canada via Montana 1999 miles. Way better than the 9.5 I got on the way down..

That is pretty good mileage Seann. Next fall you will be going down on the map all the way. You should be good for 15mpg. :hihi:

120 mile trip this last weekend in my rig. Programmed the Cortex for heavy tow, kept it no more than 65, very hilly terrain, averaged 8.8.

tahoe 5.4l towing jayfeather 5800lbs GVW - 590 miles each way last weekend from northern IL to knoxville, TN. 9.8 mpg on the way down, 10.7 on the way back up. I stayed at about 62-63mph both ways - the difference was that I used the cruise control heavily on the way down and not at all on the way back.

The truck liked to downshift on smaller hills with the cruise on. I could let the speed drop and avoid the downshift when manually on the gas pedal.

You were right, again! Shortly after the original post, we traded for a Ford F-150.
We get 10+, and can do the speed limit.
We made 15 trips this season, some long, mostly local. The new truck and the 17z made for an enjoyable season.
As for now, I have winterized the 17z and am looking for my snow shovel. Darn.

I tow a Skylark with a 2010 Toyota 4 runner, v6, 4.0. Should be similar engine to your Tacoma. This past summer we did about 10000 miles going from NH, coast of Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and then down to NC etc.
I averaged about 14.5 miles pulling the trailer. Had no water in trailer and we travel light.
No matter what I do, my mileage seems to stay right near that area. When travelling is dips down, goes up at times but in all near 15 per gallon. Am very pleased.
