Portable waste tank

I am thinking of getting a portable waste tank

http://www.dyersonline.com/barker-22-gallon-tote-along-portable-holding-tank-with-kit.html

The question is. I have 35 gallon black and grey tanks. How do I know when this thing is full?

On our Thetford there is a cap that you have to unscrew and in the center portion is a red pop up piece that warns you that you are full.. Don't know about the barker. I have had this one for years and I don't fill it up anyways. Put about 22 gals in it cause it is a 27 gal tank and when you close the slide for the tanks there will be some left in the hose, would rather have it go in the Thetford then on the ground.

I purchased Barkers version of this for my Barker 22. It did not come with the tank.

I have the 22gal barker, love it.

I don't know how you envision using it, but what we do is fill the TT tanks and once full use the tote to dump. Therefore I simply watch the tote fill up then close the grey tank before it overflows.

How do you watch it till up? Is there a site window or something of that sort? Or can you see through the plastic itself?

If the Barker unit doesn't come with the bobber gauge you can purchase it separately for about $12. It just screws into the 3/4" hose adapter on the top of the tote. I recently bought a 32-gallon Barker 4-wheel and it came with the bobber gauge. However, I noticed as I was comparing prices between several different online retailers that some came with the bobber gauge and some didn't. I got mine thru rvupgradestore.com. They were one of the few places that actually had the units with the pneumatic wheels as well which are much more durable than the hard plastic wheels. I would recommend a 4-wheel model over the 2-wheel model. They cost a bit more but are much easier to maneuver around when full.

Thanks will look into the bobber, already planning to buy the rubber tires.

I fill it using the dump valve cap that reduces the connection to hose thread. Then I use a little 2' section of hose I cut to fill the tank. By opening the vent on the tote and filling the tote with the garden hose tucked into the larger sewer hose connection opening. You can easily see as the tank fills by watching the water fill around the garden hose. Clearly this only works for grey, I've not used my tank for black.

This is much more challenging to explain than I would have expected. Hopefully you understand what I'm describing.

For ease of use and making it less messy, I would start by not filling your black tank by more than half before you try to empty it.

Best advice I can give you is to buy a tank larger than your holding tank.. This will help avoid mess mistakes

For a quick field setup, just use a wooden fishing bobber. I tied about 3" of monofilament to the bobber and tied it off around the 3/4" clean fill/flush opening. It normally stays in the tank but floats up when filling. Cap just screws down around the line between fill-ups. Cost was $0.00 as I had a couple of used ones in the Grandkids Tackle Box.

I have a 27 gal Thetford also. I would have gotten the larger one, but even it would take more than one trip to the dump and the 27 gal fits nicely between my hitch and tailgate.

Concerning that "red pop up", it works well, but in my case you had better be quick on closing the tank valves so that the stuff in the line can flow on down into the tank. With mine it works well. The red pops up, I shut the valve and wait a few seconds or so for the hose to empty, unhook, dump and do it again.

I have a 45 gal+ holding tank. I haven't see a tote big enough not to mention how to haul it. I like my 27 gal and just make two trips. Works for me.

Why are you only looking at the 22 gallon?

I have a 42 gallon and a 27 gallon Barker totes with pneumatic wheels. I bought them on craigslist for $100 and $20. I have 35 gallon tanks in my trailer. They both came with the plastic wheels, but I called Barker to order replacement pneumatic wheels and they sent me the pneumatic upgrade for free both times. Excellent customer service.

I have not used the 27 gallon tote yet. The 42 gallon tote works great, but if you have to pull it up anything, it can be heavy. I just use my truck pull it to the dump station - handle connected to the hitch ball (Side story: I was at Silverstrand State Beach in San Diego, they have a cement curb around their dump station. I had a hard time pulling it up over the curb full of gray water).

To see how full it is - they are somewhat see through. I just look at the side of it when filling. I have never, and probably will never, used them for black water. I carry it in the shell of my truck and don't want to chance a smell, as well as we can go a couple of weeks without filling the black tank in the trailer.

I would suggest keeping an eye out on craigslist for a used one. It sounds dirty, but both of the ones I have bought have been as clean as new. If they weren't who cares, they are going to get dirty anyway. Just so long as the outside isn't dirty, I wouldn't buy one like that. They can easily be cleaned, and I make sure to do so, no matter how clean it looks when I bought both of mine.

I am planning to go with the 22 Gal for the only reason is the cost and size. I looked on craigslist and couldn't find anything. What is a good way to search?
