Question: Fresh Water Tank Fill

I have a Jayflight Elite. So I filled my fresh water tank for the first time after draining the initial fill by the dealer. I filled from our house water supply. I monitored the gage inside the trailer and as it went to "full", I shut the water off and ran the pump and made sure the lines were air free and hot water tank was full. Topped off the water tank and water started coming out of the overflow line. I shut off the water and then went in to finish packing and loading the trailer. About 4 hours later, as we were getting ready to leave, I did my walk-through of the trailer and rechecked the gages for battery and water. The tank read 2/3. Hmmm I didn't bother topping tank off as we have an 80 gal tank and were heading to a nearby campground for our first weekend of dry camping. After we parked and set up, I rechecked our monitor gages and the fresh water tank read 1/3 full. What the heck? We made it through the weekend fine but I'm wondering where all the water went. Did I fill the tank properly? I know some water was coming out of the overflow line as we drove but 1/3 of the tank lost on a 40 min drive? Any thoughts?

Search on the exact words Fresh Water Tank Pukes for the solution. It is pretty easy to fix this fairly common design flaw that causes much water loss.

Thanks for the link. I was thinking of ways of clamping it off for driving and it looks like others have the same problem and solution.

I would suspect that the drain valve was partially open since you lost water before you ever left your driveway. I doubt that you would lose much water out the vent while setting still.

It ABSOLUTELY happens. My overflow tubes would run for a long time after I quit putting water in and I didn't have it going in under huge force. I actually put a 5 gallon bucket under the overflow tubes and found that it puked out almost 15 gallons just sitting still in the driveway. Once you start travelling, turning, bouncing down the road, I've lost over 1/3 of my tank before getting to the campground. The first several pages are postings by non-believers trying to find another reason for the water loss. The last 3 or so pages have a quick and easy solution that actualy works.

It's happened to me and to lots of Jayco and Starcraft owners. It is a design flaw that the company never seems to address, although the fix is very easy.
