Ram 1500 5.7L vs 2500 Question

Hello,

Yesterday I asked about the Ram 2500 with the 6.4L and got great responses - Thanks.

I noticed the new Ram 1500 with the 5.7L also has very impressive torque numbers compared to my 2009 GM 5.3L.

Wondering if that might be enough to make a significant improvement without jumping up to a 2500.

I realize the 2500 brings many additional robust features but the realty is that most of the time this truck will be a casual driver and not towing.

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time - again.

Along with my Cummins powered Ram 2500, I also have a 2010 Ram 1500 crew cab that my wife uses as her daily driver. It has something like 110K on it right now and has been a zero issue vehicle. I believe that I have done one set of brakes all around in that time and that's it. As far as the platform is concerned, I'd recommend one without hesitation.

With that said, what it lacks is payload capacity just like the other modern 1/2 tons. Moving up to a 2500 series not only gives you that added capacity, but bigger brakes, axles, tires, etc. It is night and day difference towing/hauling with it as compared to the 3/4 ton. The 2500 is just that much better.

You are not going to see enough positive improvement moving to a Ram 1500 to justify the expense. If you are going to buy another, go for the 2500. You will not regret the choice.

I just got my 2nd RAM 1500 last Sunday. This is my second lease. I gave back my old one and picked out the new one. The trucks are identical aside from the color and this time I got 3.92 gears with limited slip diff. This truck can pull just over 10k but the problem is the payload. My payload is 1550 pounds. My camper isn't that heavy so it gets the job done for me but if I could have afforded it, I would have hands down bought a 2500. Things may be different for me financially in three years and maybe I can get the 2500 then. I say that if you can get a HD truck, do it.

Note that F150's can be configured with a Heavy Duty Payload package which gives them over 2,000 lbs and up to 3,000 lbs of payload capacity (all depends on configuration and options). Have seen examples of actual payload stickers of 2,200 to 2,500 lbs payload.

The thing that I have seen which I had two 1/2 dodge ram 1500, and I was getting about 13 around town mpg and maybe 18 hwy.

Now with my 2016 2500 6.4L w/4.10 gears around town I have gotten aroung 13 mpg and on the hwy have gotten as high 17 to 18 mpg, so go figure.

My payload on the 2500 is 3000 lbs and towing is 15,650 lbs I'm loving it, this is my second 2500 hemi.

I'm pulling a 6400 lb 267BHSW with the RAM 1500 5.7 and it does OK. I haven't had any issues towing or stopping. Once moving, the truck can pull comfortably. I think it's like others have said, nobody complains about too much truck. I thought of trading in the 1500 for a 2500, but then thought, I'd wait on the next trailer to decide on a TV.
When I bought the 1500, I was towing a popup which a Jetta could have handled.
If we upgrade the trailer or consider a 5W, the 2500 might not have been enough.
The 1500 is my daily driver and it moves well through town or on highways. It's been a good compromise vehicle.

The 2014+ 5.3L engines are significantly more powerful than the previous years and more efficient than the 5.7L Hemi ( but less powerful). That being said, the limiting factor with either brand's 1500 is payload and duty cycle.

Chase,

Power wise a 1500/150 usually does pretty good as long as it is properly optioned with good gearing for towing.

But as mentioned, when choosing between a 1500 or 2500 it really should come down to the payload needed for the total weight of: your family (all occupants in the truck), all cargo (coolers, bikes, firewood, etc), any accessory added to the truck (step bars, topper/tonneau cover, etc), and the tw of the tt.

Also don't forget to keep an eye on the tw rating of the trucks factory mounted receiver hitch. Most 1500/150 trucks are limited not only by the payload, but also the factory hitch.

Look for the yellow payload sticker in the drivers door jamb of every potential truck!!! It will state: "All occupants and cargo not to exceed XXXXlbs".

So start crunching some numbers and see where you're at for total needed payload. If you have a CAT Scale nearby, try to get the actual weights (total and the tw) of your 29 all loaded up for a trip. If needed, follow my signature CAT Scale how to link so you get all the correct weights.

Good luck shopping!!!

New 1500's are not trucks. They are SUV's with a box instead of an interior. These are not the half tons of the 70's. Treat them as an SUV and make your decisions from there.

Most 1500's today have more capacity than the 1500's from the 70's.

Hello BAP,

How does your 1500 do with your 29 BHS?

It looks like your towing newer version of my camper.

Mine is 5650 lbs dry.

My GMC is fine at low speeds and flat highways but struggles with the highway hills and passing etc.

Please share your experiences.

Thanks

I have had two 1/2 and for what I tow I don't regret going to the 3/4 but good luck your needs want be others, what is your need is the question that you have to ask yourself.

We tow our Jay Feather 23RBM with our RAM 1500. Our RAM has a 1,600 lb. payload capacity. That is the limiting factor. It does not take much to max out a 1/2 ton chassis, suspension, and brakes when it comes to payload. We are at our RAM's margins with our Jay Feather and our cargo. I would recommend a 2500. You won't regret it, and you can grow with it. If we want to go any bigger in a towable, we'll have to move up to a 2500. I do not care to hang around a TV's margins. Sure, our RAM is rated to pull nearly 10K, but that is a completely different issue versus CCC/payload. We have plenty of engine and drivetrain for our set up, but a 1/2 ton is not designed for the bigger load numbers.

I just moved from an F150 Ecoboost to a 6.7L F250 diesel. No question it is superior for towing, you'll be sorry if you get the lesser truck as long as you are buying a new truck. My concern was the same you express (how would it do when not towing). I have been pleasantly surprised that the F250 rides as smooth as my F150 even empty and my gas mileage has been comparable. Other than a little bigger to park it has been every bit as nice an everyday truck as my F150 which I loved.

My F250 diesel getting 17-18 in town not towing. I don't know what the Rams are getting. Compare 440 HP and 925 ft lbs of torque to the Rams as well.

What does this have to do with the question asked?

My 2015 1500 is all the truck I need to pull my 267BHSW. I have been happy with the performance of the 5.7 Hemi. Any bigger travel trailer and I think the 2500 would be just right. As far as gas mileage I average 21-24 on I-70 between Grand Junction and Denver around town 18-19 without the travel trailer.
