Reconnecting brakes

Rear axle is not working. Pulled passenger side apart. Adjuster sitting in the bottom of the drum loose. Problem identified. Need to go get new adjuster and spring pretty mutilated. Driver side the magnet is not working. Looking at the connections they are rusty and corroded. Thinking of just cutting the connectors off and recrimping new connectors on. Thoughts? Then if that does not work I will replace the magnet. The issue is that the wires for the passenger side are spliced threw the drivers side and it works. Still would like to reconnect the wires.

I have voltage at the axle splice. But can't get a reading at the brake splice without stabbing the wire and ran out of daylight

Oh I better go plug my emergency disconnect back in. That's how I was testing. Thanks for reminding me

Nothing wrong with cutting off the old connectors and crimping on new. Make sure you have enough slack wire to work with. Often corrosion makes its way up the inside the insulation, and you may have to cut off a few additional inches to find clean wire. I applied liquid electrical tape to all my connectors, to keep the moisture out.

I saw the whole brake assembly with the backing plate for about $50 each on etrailer. If everything is old and rusted its easier and cheaper to remove a few bolts and bolt on a nice complete assembly.

Reconnected the wires on the driver side. Brake magnet is bad. Cut it off and put it on the battery and nothing. Going to replace tomorrow. What is this liquid electrical tape you speak of?

Got a new magnet from the junk pile in the back of the trailer shop. Getting a new adjuster tomorrow. Is the adjuster specific to the unit or pretty universal? I know they are side specific

You have to look if it matches the old adjuster. I use copper grease in the connectors for the last 40 years and never had electrical problems with the brakes.

Good thing is I got an entire assembly for that side. So I hope the adjuster will transfer if needed
