This is what paint shops use, 3M 08984 General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner. I have used it for years and it has never hurt the paint, used wd40 once and it softened the paint and some came off, never again.

Lighter fluid (like for a Zippo, not charcoal) works well.

On the way to get the 3M product
My body shop friends said that I have patronized them enough to borrow what I need with no repayment cost--

My buddy owned a body shop for years. He told me that whenever you remove a sticker/decal from a vehicle you should always apply a thin coat of wax to the area. I used the wax that comes in a spray bottle. That said I also used the 3M stuff to remove stickers/decals.

3M was a little harsh on the paint in places but work good otherwise.
