Removing fittings

I noticed today that the elbow on top of my gas regulator has cracks in it and is leaking gas. This is the elbow that the pigtail to the gas tank connects to. I tried to turn it off to replace it and stopped because it was taking too much force to turn it. It looks to have pipe dope on it and I am nervous to apply any more pressure to it, When a fitting such as this is put on with the pipe dope should it still be removable? This is a new 2014 185 rb camper. The dealer said to bring it in and he will fix it but I live 35 miles away and I am hoping just to go to a local gas company for a replacement as the fitting would surely be a fraction of the cost of the gasoline to drive the camper to the dealer. I am worried that I might break of the fitting and have to replace the regulator. How much is a new regulator? Thanks for any help on this

For the auto changeover model, about 30 bucks. The standard one is about 20 bucks.
