Sanitizing question

After the cold spell this weekend I will be sanitizing the water system in my new to me 26 bh

This is my first tt and I wondering where people do this activity... In front of the house?

Where else could you have access to city water?

I do mine right in the driveway. Just be aware that you will filling and draining the fresh water tank at least 4 times if you are doing this right,

Once to run the bleach solution through the system. Bleach should be 1 cup per 30 gallons of capacity. Let that fill set for 4-6 hours. The rest of the fill/drains to rinse the tank thoroughly.

Just have to ask because of the time of the year it is. Are you sanitizing or winterizing? There is a big difference in outcomes. I do both jobs while the HTT is sitting in the street (I have no off street parking). Chuck is right on the money about time and water volumes. You can use a higher amount of bleach to sanitize faster, but you need a lot more water to flush the bleach out of the system. I try to let my bleach water sit in the holding tanks and pipes over night. That way I know it has sat in the lines long enough, and then flush the next day. I think flushing is the worst part of the job. I typically only sanitize once a year in the spring when I dewinterize the HTT.

Where to do it, wherever you can get a hose to reach and the TT to sit level enough so it will fill the holding tank and sewer system will drain. I do not like putting bleach down the toilet as it will kill the good bacteria, but I have to do a little just to flush the water line.

You do not note where you are located. Just note that if you live where it freezes you need to drain the system of all fresh water (tanks, lines, P traps, etc), or you will rupture a pipe. If you live in the arctic north you will want to use RV antifreeze, if you live in the south, you can get by with using compressed air and blowing out the lines, but most people still like to use RV antifreeze anyways as it is cheap insurance.

Im in central Texas. The reason I'm sanitizing now is the trailer is new to me and I'm planning to camp soon as the cold spell passes.

I wondered if the neighbors ever complain about draining bleach water down the street.

Get a good flow of fresh water going down the street first before pulling the drain. Hopefully your neighbors wont think your draining your black tank in the street and call the cops or EPA. You can also consider hooking your TT sewer hose up to your drain clean out on your home (if you have one)

The new EPA regs require you to register your trailer as a wetlands and remove the wheels if you leave the tank full longer than 20 minutes.

If a neighbor says anything just tell them you are flushing the lines as you do not know the TT’s history. Skip the fact that you added a little bleach to the water. In my opinion flushing the lines is a lot friendlier on the environment than washing a car or the TT.

If you leave the trailer hitched to your truck you can rinse with around 10 gallons each time and pull ahead and back a few times to slosh the water tank. You really only need to fill it full once.

I use ice machine sanitizer to sanitize the fresh water system for a couple of reasons I always have it on the work truck and it is citrus based and my son is allergic to bleach!
