Skylight cover

We took delivery of a 2015 26RKS last Saturday. The kitchen has a large skylight that does not have a built in shade. I am posing the question the the group for solutions to block the intense Northern California sun

they make insulated cut outs you can put it in there some are just insulation and others have a foil like material on one side of the insulation that will help reflect heat. something like this might work

That would work perfectly in the bathroom; however, the skylight in the kitchen is not square.

We use a couple of adjustable length spring loaded curtain rods to hold a narrow sheer in the opening - we added a "pocket" to the bottom of the sheer to accept the rod. It doesn't block the light, but it does cut the glare dramatically

We use something like this on our door window. I imagine it could work on the skylight, depending on the size. It is held up by velcro, so you would need to stick that to the plastic frame of the skylight.

The newer Jayco's with the Elite package come with this longer rectangular skylight. I like the light it will bring in, but I am concerned about durability, leakage and finding parts for it since its non-standard. I'd also like some type of shield for the top of the skylight when I'm not using the TT.

We went to wally world and bought a cheap car windshield sun shield made out of the metallic reflective bubble material.
We then cut it to size for both the Kitchen skylight and bathroom skylight.
Next we attached some Velcro to the edges and put it in place. It has made a huge difference in the heat pouring in from them.
Florida gets a bit of sun too and this made a big difference.

I'm amazed that RV manufacturers still make skylights a mandatory accessory. Not everyone will use their RVs where the temperatures are moderate. Also, the same skylights that let in so much heat also let heat out in cooler weather.

Way back in the day I had a '79 Oldsmobile Cutlass with a T-Top. In the dead of summer, sometimes you just didn't want the tops off. But even with the AC on, you'd bake. I cut some thick cardboard to fit under the panels. It worked great.

I think the same could easily be made for this application, only better perhaps covered with some sort of reflective covering.

Would someone with the larger kitchen skylight take measurements if they are in/nearby their unit? The Camco shade jasoncw mentioned is 16.25" x 25.25" and seems like it might be an ok fit if not a little large.

When we've ordered our rigs in the past, we ordered them without the skylights. I don't like them at all due to the heat. This time I was a little impatient, bought one off the lot with the skylight, and did what you see in the pictures. I'll get rid of the outer dome later, just coated it with liquid roof for now.

I like that! I would have to put a Star in mine but to each their own

Totally understand the star. We're practically on the east Texas / west Louisiana border, so I see both shown proud for sure. Guess I'll have to remove that when we sell or I'll limit my market.

I was just at my selling dealer and saw a26RKS with a pleated shade on the kitchen skylight. It had a United Shade sticker on it. I will take measurements to see if I can order a pleated shade for my trailer. It's 104 here today and the heat that comes through the uncovered skylight is insane.

Exactly why I hate them. If I wanted light inside, I'd turn the light on. If I want heat and sunlight, I'll go outside. They make no sense to me, but that's just me.

Somewhere I read you have to be careful because of the heat that can build up between the shade and the skylight, but I am looking for something also, as you can just feel the heat under the skylight. The skylight over the kitchen in our 28.5 RKDS is 30"x17 3/4", the one over the table 13 3/4"x22 1/4". So they are pretty good size...
