Question Slides in or out ?

I was at my dealer yesterday and asked about the slides on my TT.....We are permanently parked in our woods and leave the slides out all the time...... Dealer told me they weren't made to be extended all the time, we should only be putting them out when using TT ( every weekend )......... Question is-- what is everyone's thoughts on slides being retracted or left out?? Should I or shouldn't I ?

We leave ours out.

We leave ours out. We are at a seasonal campground and leave ours out for the five months we are there. I have seen where some people put blocking under their slideouts but I think that is a bad idea.

It probably wouldn't make any difference mechanically, but if it were my "new" TT I would pull them in so that the slide motors and seals were utilized while still under warranty.

Also, having the slides in may reduce the available areas for critters to find a way in while the TT isn't in use......, and less roof area exposed to a possible tree limb damaging it do to a storm.

I agree with Rustic Eagle. I full time and my slides are used frequently and yesterday I was in my dealer having a few minor items fixed and I asked them to take a look at my large slide. It has started moving very slowly. Determination - bad motor. Better to find out now so I don't have to pay for it.

This is a great question. Thanks for posting it. I agree with Bob and like Ed I noticed a difference in the speed of the slide out and am having it checked out for that. I also suspect that the trailer would have it's slide out while it sat on the sales lot for an extended period of time. I know from reading the manual that they don't want you putting jacks under the slide. I would think putting the slide in and out every couple of weeks would keep everything in a working state and a reason to check out the far side of the trailer for any changes.

We're on a seasonal site too and I put our slides out on April 15th and in on Oct 15th, never had a problem in 4 years.

IMO it depends if awnings cover the slides. If yes leave them out if no bring the slide in. Plus agree with bringing slides in every so often to keep motor and slide lubed.

Our slides are out usually 9 or 10 months a year. We do put them in when we are not using it and expect heavy rain

I pull mine in after every weekend, or week, of use. I am on a heavily treed site and, especially at this time of year, it gets covered in leaves in about 5 minutes.

It works the mechanisims and doesn't gather as much twigs, leaves, etc.

I don't have an awning over my slide out. Do you guys sweep the leaves off your slid out before yo close it? I had a guy tell me the slide out will scrape the leaves off itself but I don't see how.

I sweep the leaves and twigs off. The leaves and small twigs and nuts won't hurt my seals, but they will end up inside the trailer and I don't want them inside (could result in musty odor). I also sweep any water off. Again I don't want the water to slosh onto the floor when traveling home. I always carry a step ladder in the truck bed when camping. It comes in handy for other things too.

John,

Your correct, most of the newer slide seals are just that, a seal..., not a debris scraper.

Whatever is on the slide, I sweep off using my step ladder. If I didn't it would be just my luck a twig (or whatever) big enough to create a water passage between the seal and slide would be my demise!

I've been climbing up on my roof to sweep the leaves etc. off my slide out. Is that not a good idea? Will my roof not withstand my being on it that much?

John

For my seasonal site TT's large slide, it goes "out" in the spring and "in" at fall. To me, in/out every weekend isn't needed. If worried about too much dirt / crud on the slide's roof (for example: http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...e/100_0358.jpg ), simply install a soft fabric / spring loaded slide topper.

Note: If a seasonal site and you plan to be at the same spot for many years, simply install you own "hard top" slide cover. Give it a nice slope and allow it to have some flex. For example: http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...ideCover-2.jpg & http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...e/CoverTop.jpg

Works for me....

John,

I'm sure it will handle the weight (best when it's distributed), but minimizing visits to the roof reduce the potential for compromising the caulking around vents, drip rails, stink pipes, sky-lights, A/C seals, etc..

I only go on my TT roof twice a year to inspect seams and caulking. I do check and clear debris from my slide roof before closing standing from one of these: http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardw...atalogId=10053 Nice and compact when folded up.

Great reply's everyone, thanks. Pros and cons but which way to go, do have the toppers on all three slides so top of slide is protected but do I want the sun to shorten the life of the toppers? Small pain to close slides but would be more secure against the weather and critters. ............guess I'll start closing them to exercise the motors while I still have warranty and to protect my toppers from the sun..........lol maybe split it 50-50..thanks again everyone

I'm in a seasonal site that's open basically may to october and I only pull my tip outs in @ the end of the season after sweeping them off. I will however, start doing it once or twice during the season to make sure everything stays ok.

Good advice!
