something in ground while setting up trailer

My buddy has a Keystone product, I won't hold it against him. But any way he was setting up his trailer in his front yard for guests. He was putting out his carpet and he decided to spike it down. Which we all do. Well low and behold cable is out to his house and some neighbors. The cable company comes out to investigate and they find one of his spikes hit a buried cable line that was only buried about 12 inches. They should be at least 18 inches. Got me thinking about how many spikes I have put in the ground at campsites. Makes you wonder what if there could be anything you could hit. Has anyone else hit anything.

Never mind the spike, the fact that he had a Keystone alone could have knocked out power for the entire neighborhood.

The CATV lines in this part of North Carolina are buried only about 2". I cut one planting a small bush a few years back.

I use rocks or pieces of wood I carry with me. Not for this reason, but because the ground is usually too hard to pound into or too rocky.

Wow. All that stuff is a minimum of 3-4 feet below ground here in Canada.
Must be a real pain trying to install landscape irrigation below the 49th.

They usually avoid the area that a stake would be driven. Then dump a ton of rock so you can't put one anywhere it needs to be?

I staked them down in North Dakota, and they froze to the ground. Had to throw them away as the ripped removing them. I forgot how expensive they were.

Yes owning a Keystone may have done it. LOL. Your right trying to get the stakes in through the rocks is difficult. I have also bent up many stakes. I also have tried putting something on the corners , but that becomes a trip hazard. Sometimes you can only get the spikes in halfway and they are trip hazards. I had to once leave a chair at each corner. There was no way getting a spike in, after destroying 3 of them that was my solution.

Hey! No Keystone bashing!! I had a Keystone Outback for nine years and didn't have a single problem with it, except the pump, when I first brought it home. Took it back to the dealer and they replaced it - no questions asked.

IMO, Keystone Outbacks are great trailers. They just didn't have any layouts I liked this time around.

Our biggest problem is hidden tree roots and hidden rocks. We camp mostly in Forest Service 'grounds; we mostly don't put out rugs 'cause it's so hard to secure them. We just use a couple of welcome mats. When we go to Highland Games, though, we like to have a rug between the tables in our Scottish clan's booth, and we do stake it down - but only with 6" or 7" spikes, which is often the limit at the venue.

It was just an attempt at humor on a Jayco owners forum. I`m sure Keystones are OK...

No one is bashing Keystone. As long as we all have a camper, who cares. We are all one big happy camping family.

No offense taken, folks. I know on the Outbackers.com website, they refer to anything other than an Outback as an SOB (Some Other Brand) trailer. I thought that was funny! LOL!

Rest assured - there are plenty of problems with Outbacks. But then, I read about plenty of problems here, too. However, Jayco has a 2-year warranty and they seem to be better about fixing things without a lot of hassle. Just hope I don't have to find out, one way or the other!

Everything around here is a minimum of 4 feet below ground, below the frost line. The winter before last was so cold that the frost line went to 6 or 8 feet and some peoples' water lines to their houses froze solid. Some didn't thaw out until June. Even so, our utility companies keep reminding people to "Call before you dig". But if you want to roto-till your garden or something, it's usually not a problem.

Several years ago I was having a pool built at my house. The pool company had the underground utilities marked and then the backhoe started digging. He hadn't gone down far when we all heard a heck of a loud noise and smoke came from the hole. He had cut an underground electric power line. It seems the line was buried 10' or so outside the easement and was not even close to deep enough. It was not marked by the marking company since we weren't digging on the easement. This was a main line and it knocked out power to several homes, but I don't remember the count. The utility company came out and buried another one where it should have been and as deep as it should have been at no cost to me or the pool company. I don't remember if they bought the backhoe operator a new pair of shorts or not, but he said he definitely needed them.

You'd better go buy a lottery ticket if you get lucky enough to drive a stake in the ground in the Fayette Ridges of PA. There's an old saying, "If you can't lick 'em, join 'em", so I put rocks (and other heavy objects like tables, chairs, etc... even a brass cat!) on my carpet to hold it down.

Why are you using 12 inch spikes to hold down a ground mat

"Something in the ground?" this happened to us while tent camping many years ago we were in a KOA in New York state and got a "tent" site. while setting up and a incoming thunderstorm I was hammering in the tent pegs and had a little resistance so it must be a root I thought so pound it in harder, well it was no root it was a water line and it made a sweet geyser water spewing out of the ground about 3-4 feet. really a water line running through the middle of a tent site who would have thought. while they were repairing the line we ended up at a dept. store to ride out the storm.
