suggestions for surge protector

we finally have our new 212QBW home and our TV ready to go. anyone have a suggestion for a quality surge protector that won't break the bank ?
Have also seen quite a few threads on having one hard wired in ? pros and cons on that ? Be advised of all the things I know, electricity is not my strong suit.
thanks from a newbie

You will read many posts saying Hard wire is the way to go...............however we did a hard wire a year ago. It lasted 4 months and failed. Cost an arm and 2 legs to get removed by a electrician. I will never do a hard wire again, pedestal mount is for me. At least I can replace it without an issue or electrician when traveling.

I use a hard wired progressive industries EMS. It is not difficult to install. You don't need an electrician to install it. Just some hand tools and the ability to read and look at pics provided. On our previous camper I used a pedestal mount progressive industries EMS.

They both work the same so it's just a choice as to hard wired or not. Either way, my choice is an EMS from progressive industries.

I think you will find that today most are installing the Progressive Electrical Management System hard wired units. They are $$$ but it's something you don't have to keep track of and being hardwired in your TT it won't be stolen from the campground electrical post. The alternative for a little discount is the dogbone type that you would plug in to the campground post. They do make locking devices to secure them to but then your to the cost of a hardwired unit. If not electrically inclined you may want to use the dogbone or have your dealer install the hardwired unit inside yout TT.

Agreed a hard wired unit is not difficult to install. It is the crimping of the connectors to remove it that is the issue. It takes specific connectors and a tool to put them back together. We were out in the middle of no where and had to use the Generator for power due to the Progressive Surge protector failure on one leg.
Couldn't by pass the surge protector due to being hard wired. Staying with pedestal mount.

According to the Jayco web site your TT is a 30 Amp Service so you would use a 30A EMS.

troutcamper,

For reference, here's my 30amp Progressive Industries EMS hardwire install:

http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f3...ll-6896-3.html

Oh, should you have to by-pass/remove a hardwired EMS unit for some reason, a couple of hand twist-on wire connectors (proper gauge) and a screw driver is all one needs. I carry a few different size twist-on wire connectors anyways.

The portable version allows you to easily transfer it to anything else down the road.

I chose Progressive Industries EMS 30A.

Can't help but start thinking about mods while reading @loboclones post. What about using a portable inside the TT, assuming that your cable storage is fairly accessible. Basically, disconnect the inside end of the power cord, add on a 30A Female connector, then add a short length of 30A rate cable with a male connector. You can then mount the portable unit inside the TT, but would need to be somewhere that you can read the display easily. No worries about theft, or forgetting to use it, and easy to remove and replace or take along to a new TT. Also keeps it out of the weather as I read on another post that they aren't actually water proof units.
I know in my 19H I would have to do a bit of surgery to get there, but I would have to do the same to mount a permanent unit too.
I guess the question would be if these portable units heat up much or have any other dangers that would prevent indoor use.

I'll have to look into that. Just got the unit last week and am still familiarizing myself with it. I have a good friend who is master electrician. So can have him install if need be. He's going to put me in a 30 amp outlet at my house as well.
thanks for the replies

The Progressive Industries hard wired unit is servicable, at least according to their literature (if I recall correctly). If something breaks, you can get parts for it. Not so with the the portable units.

I'm handy with electricity, so installing the hard wired unit was a no brainer. I removed it from my previous trailer and installed it in my current trailer with no issues. Yes...it took longer to install than plugging in a portable unit, but I also don't have to worry about it "walking off" on me.

Been using a "plug in" for years and I know no one that has had one stolen and we camp with several very large clubs. Besides if your worried about theft a small piece of chain and pad lock will solve the problem. In many cases you can lock the cover on the pedestal.

Maybe it's a new feature but my Progressive Industries hard wired 50amp model has a bypass switch on the remote display.

My upon table unit has a display that shows the status of the unit and power, including the current amp draw. I wouldn't want to "hardwire" it and lose those displays. On the pedastal is fine.

With the portable unit you send it to them and it comes back good as new. I've done that twice now; turn around was less than two weeks. Only cost to me - shipping (one way).

It comes with a small display and length of cable, so you can mount it wherever you want.

Auto-correct got me. I meant to say my PORTABLE unit... Someone was suggesting hardwiring a portable unit.
