surge protection

As we normally dry camp, this topic hasn't come up. We are about to make a trip to Montana and will stay at a number of RV parks with full hook ups. I spoke with our local trailer supply store as to the need for this and he was quite frank and said only about 1% of his customers buy surge protection. How do people feel on this forum? Is power surge a major issue?

I keep thinking about buying one, but never have. Parents have camped with some type of trailer since the 60’s and never have had one. Neither of us have ever had an issue, but I have heard of issues. The headache they could prevent would be worth it.

I carry a multi-meter to check the voltage and another gauge to ensure the electrical post is wired properly. It does not prevent damage from a surge, lightning strike, brown out, or so forth.

Highly recommend. If something happens and your trailer gets fried by a surge, you'll wish you had it.

Before purchasing be sure you educate yourself on the difference between a surge protector and an EMS. An EMS offers far more protection than an surge only device.

To have one or not is just one of those questions that each has to answer for himself. I Have a Progressive PT50C that has been in service for the past 5 years. I absolutely won't plug in anywhere without it. It shut down the power to my 5'er for high voltage, low voltage, open ground and open neutral, but I can't specifically say I have seen a surge. I just don't remember since I have seen numerous of all of the issues listed.

What will I do if my PT50C ever dies and has to go back to PI for service? I will unbox the brand new spare that I have never used. As I said above, I absolutely won't plug in anywhere without it.

I have seen entirely too many electrical issues in RV parks and the high voltage problem was on my home base site which is in a residential area.

YMMV

Progressive Industries EMS-PT50C for us, as well. Love it (and the peace of mind).

Went dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant with some fellow campers tonight. Came back and the microwave was showing zeros instead of the time. Checked the PI EMS and it was showing a PE04. So it had shutdown for a low voltage while we were gone, and then powered backup when voltage was safe. Thus saving wear and tear on my AC.

That happens a lot to me also. Remember, a lot of RV parks are old. The state park I'm hosting in now for my 5th summer dates from 1950. Initially it didn't even provide electricity at the sites. 20 amp was added first, then 30 amp, and now some sites have 50 amp, but the wiring hasn't kept up with the increased load so voltage issues are present when it is hot. How many more RV's today have 2 a/c's, microwaves, washer/dryer's, etc.?

Yep, my PT50C is the first thing I plug in and the last I unplug every time.

What did you order? A surge protector or an EMS?

We use a surge protector, water pressure regulator & water filter. Cheap insurance. No problems to date.
