surge protector

How many of you have a surge protector for your camper? We are looking in this and trying to decide which one to purchase if we go that route.

I have a hardwired Progressive Industries electrical management system, protects unit from far more than just electrical surges. Will not camp without one!

Progressive Industries EMS...either portable or installed. Can't beat the warranty!

Super easy to do it yourself. If you are close to Houston i would be willing to help.

It's not that hard to to yourself, but I couldn't imagine a dealer doing it for more than a couple hundred dollars.

I had no intentions of having it installed by my dealer since I was very comfortable doing it (took 20 minutes) but I called and asked anyway - $150 with no warranty from them if I didn't buy it from them which would have cost me another $60.

Cut your main power cable, strip wires on both ends, wire the unit in line and screw it to the floor, that's all there is to it.

The most time consuming part is figuring out where to conceal the unit and where to mount the remote monitor and run that cable.

I've owned 2 from Progrssive, a 30A pole mount and currently a 50A hard wired. I prefer the hard wired and installed it myself.
One point I'd make is, don't cut the original service unless you have to, in case you need/want to remove it at a later date.
This is a company where I believe "You get what you pay for".

Progressive Industries EMS 30 amp Portable, won't camp w/out it unless boon docking of course. Small price when you think about what your rig cost you.

The nice thing about the internal progressive EMS is they are modular so if they get zapped you can replace internal components. Pretty much all the outside ones are tossed when they get zapped.

For what it is worth I saw they had a bunch of them on sale at Camping World the other day. Not sure if they are still on sale though.

You can get a portable one if you won't want to hard wire it.

Surge Protector

We only did a couple of trips last year without a surge protector, but with the wife reading some blogs and Facebook RV'ing sites, she decided that we needed one. Camping World had the Surge Guard Protectors on sale so we got a 30 AMP external model.

We are looking to trade in our present RV, so I wouldn't consider a hard-wired protector until we get the new trailer. It looks like everyone seems to prefer the PI units over the others on the market.

If you are looking for something a little more budget friendly, you could opt for something like a Square D HEPD80. That's a "whole house" surge protector that will do the same thing (surge protection wise) for about $100.

http://a.co/egoH0rw

Since your TT is only 120V/30A, you'd only use one of the black wires, white, and green (using one of the two split phases). Just wire it in parallel with the incoming power cable to your converter.

No, you don't get all the fancy voltage display and over/under voltage disconnect stuff... but I have read of some users having the voltage disconnect fail when running on generator and trying to start the A/C.

There is also a cheap ($20) Chinese special AC volt/ammeter combo out there that you can add in (includes the current transformer), if you want to add voltage/current/power display. http://a.co/aO6xeVG

So, some other options to consider, if you are handy. The surge protection is probably the most valuable... the rest is bells and whistles (and points of failure). At least if you wire it in yourself, you know how to bypass it in an emergency.

These are good too. We went the hard wire route to avoid worrying about someone stealing the portable off the pole.
