Surge Protectors

I own a new G2 29bhs and I understand it would be wise to have a Surge Protector. Does anyone have any suggestions?. Camping World sells a 30amp for around $80 and another for $250, they also sell a Surge Protector & Circuit Analyzer for $97, a little confused as to which one I would need, don't want to pay $250 if it's not necessary.

I have the Electrical Management System Portable 30AMP (PT30) one from Progressive Industries. Got it from Tweetys. See link: http://tweetys.com/progressive-indus...rotectors.aspx

They ain't cheap, but compared with having to replace all the on board electronics if a surge hits they're worth it. Look for a high joule rating. Here's a link to a comparison chart:http://viprv.com/ems/ems-chart.htm

For my 2006 Jayco 29FBS at our seasonal site, I installed a "hard wire" 30A Surge Guard. If wondering, I bought it used (but was never installed) from a different TT owner. For picture of its install, surf: http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...e/100_2043.jpg

To me, all PUPs, TTs, RVs, etc. must have Surge Protection. Even basic Surge Guard product is better then nothing at all. If dollars is unlimited, go with more advanced Circuit Analyzer. But if money is tight (like in my family), Surge Guard product is better then nothing.

I purchased a nice one off ebay for $80.00. I had seen the same one at the dealer for $100.00. This one plugs in to the power pedastal. When funds are not so tight I will have a permanent one installed on the TT.

We bought an inline analyzer for near 200 and had it installed for 70. Wouldn't leave home without it. There is a 2.5 minute delay between plugging in at the post and the "pop" sound that tells us all is well and you can safely use this campgrounds electricity now.

Pay the $250.00 it is the best investment in camping you will make. there are too many campgrounds out there that ma & pa did the wiring and any wire on any part of the plug will do... protect your RV this surge guard is GREAT.. it has saved my RV twice now. (how much does a new TV, DVD player,microwave, A/C unit cost you?)

X2.... You are better off getting the EMS then just surge protection.

Here's what we got. Worked great two seasons and will go with our unit when we sell it. We'll buy the same thing for the new Eagle 320RLDS. Note big price differences.

Just an FYI.... Within the URL you provided (re: http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CDoQ8wIwAw# ) its page shows a 50 Amp model picture but its words are for 30A model. Also, the picture is an "old style - with a key" model. Was told that Surge Guard no longer makes models with a key. If wondering, the key allows "low current" by-pass. re: Can continue to work when current is below 102Vs. They stopped making with a key bypass ability because some folks would turn the key to OFF (as a temp solution) and accidently leave it within this position. Today's Surge Models are no longer available with key over-ride (like the Surge Guard 30A device within my TT). Just a little FYI - in case others are looking for the "exact same picture" of Surge Guard model - for their TT....

Spike, thanks. Your url is the very same photo I was looking at when saving the faulty url. Confusing. You are right, though. You can't even read the model number at the page I ended up sending folks to. Must have screwed up somewhere. I'll save your url for when our new trailer comes in.

Hi there... Yes. Their pictures can be confusing at times.

For more details (from TRC - makers of Surge Guard devices), surf:

30A "hard wire" = http://www.trci.net/products/surge-g...s/30a-hardwire

50A "hard wire" = http://www.trci.net/products/surge-g...s/50a-hardwire

Their differences??? 50A has 4 x LEDs on their front panel and 4 x Wires (Red, Black, White and Ground). The 30A only has 3 LEDs on their front panel and only have wires (Black, White and Ground).

When purchasing, one must always select the appropriate model - for their RVs/TT main panel configuration. Or, the appropriate model based on its Power Cord wires.

I hardwired my 30 amp one in so it could not be stolen... at the same time I changed the cord to a "plug in" style.

Spike, was I just lucky on my surge guard unit, because I didn't know it was to be model specific, just a 30 amp job? Or does one size pretty much fit all? I will be buying another for our new Jayco Eagle 320 RLDS, so your info is appreciated. I did check price with the dealer and it was over 500 installed, but if memory serves, we paid just under 200 and another 70 for installation. Of course, I don't know what brand the dealer had in mind. And while I'm picking your brain, is the surge guard model we've discussed here inferior to or less than what I've seen called ems units? If so, is it a whistle and bells difference or a more substantial difference?
