I think this topic always gets a lot of responses because we all love trucks, horsepower and torque. Truth is, if money wasn't a consideration we'd all be driving big ass diesel trucks!

I have a x23b about 5000ib loaded. I am in the market for a new truck. I know I am sticking with a 4 door pickup. Plenty of room for the family and nice to be able to throw stinky stuff in the back. Like gas cans, dogs that got sprayed by a skunk, larger loads, etc.... currently I have a 5.4l ford but very disappointed on the towing with it. its a dog and the stability of it is poor. I do use an equalizer hitch with it. Looking at the ford ecoboost and a 3/4 ton duramax. Pros and cons to both. I think I made my mind up. Being I would have bought the 1/2 ton ecoboost brand new think they go around the 40k price range. Thought hey buy a 2012 or newer 3/4 ton durmax for same money. This way I get to try the diesel out. Also I do love my x23b but if I did get the diesel then I could upgrade to a 5er. Also I herd the eco's pull up the mtn good but haven't heard about coming down the mtn the diesel s have exhaust braking which is priceless

I bought a Ford F 150 as my daily driver and I love it. It has the 5.0 and I bought the 5.0 because of the issues that the Ecoboost have, to each there own. I will be making a decision in a few years when I trade in my trailer for a lighter one that I will tow...as we plan to go south each winter!

I've not had an issue 1 and haven't read/heard of any. What have you heard? I've got 40,000 on mine and been a jewel. It's payload that is making me think about up grading, not towing. I came down 5% grade, 4 miles. Cruise set at 55 in tow mode and the truck didn't sweat a bit, and rpms were 3500 or less.

Just read of the condensation and spark plug gaping. No big deal to fix, but some seem to be having real troubles. Will see how it goes, but still love mine.

There are some bigger issues that I read about...

http://www.f150forum.com/f38/2011-55...-fixes-128636/

Not all have these issues but some do including my friend.....in and out of the dealer 20 times.

Well. I have a 04 Dodge Ram 4x4 with the hemi.....I get about 10 mpg pulling my 5500 lb TT. It has the tow haul mode that changes the shift points of the transmission. Great truck for my trailer, pulls ff the line really well and I can keep up with traffic. The only thing I want to do is install rear air bags on the suspension. When I load up the bed of my truck with camping gear and what not...it does drop. Having the airbags will level it out nicely.
If you want torque and decent fuel mileage...do with the diesel....repairs are pricey on those though and diesel is more expensive than gas...at least here in BC. I would love to check out the new Ram 1500 Diesel though

Welcome to the forum. You really need to determine what fits you. As most diesel owners will point out, you will probably never recoup the initial investment of a diesel upgrade in fuel. You will get much better mpgs while towing allowing more distance between fuels stop and such (I get about 30-40% better). Advantages to a diesel are higher towing capacity, engine longevity, and most importantly torque. I have driven many size trucks with everything from V6s to 454s, and diesels truly tow much nicer. It rarely ever downshifts and hasn't gone below fifth, I can get up to highway speeds easily, hills are no problem, and I can set the cruise and not worry about it. It also does a phenomenal job engine braking in the hills. On my Ford 6.7 I can actually set the speed for the descent and it will engine brake accordingly. It'll cruise at 65 mpg at about 1700 rpm all day long with my trailer and boat combo ~ 12,000 lbs.

On the flip side, maintenance is more expensive - about $100 per oil change and $175 or so for a fuel filter change ( I do it every 15k).

Just depends on what you want to spend and what you will use it for. Nothing wrong with gassers, but a diesel works for what I want so I will not go back to gas tow vehicles. Also, nothing wrong with a used diesel if thats the direction you were considering but do your research to good and bad engine models and service history.

My buddy brought his 27' Airstream to RMNP last year with his Ecoboost. He loved it except coming back down. He said it was a chore dealing with the brake heat.

Precisely the reason I went from an Ecoboost to this 3500HD with the LML Duramax. Our 28DSBH pushed the F150 down the Siskiyous and the Grapevine Going down the Rockies with our 28DSBH in cruise control set at 60, with the exhaust brake and downshifting doing all the work for you was amazing. It was 4100 miles of stress-free towing from Washington State to South Dakota and back.

To get back on point, I think it's obvious that the OP has some hard questions, mainly what will happen next with this towing needs, and if his towing will encounter mountain grades. If it remains as-is then any half ton truck will suffice. Heck, if budget isn't an issue maybe a Diesel VW Touarag or Audi Q7 TDI will work, and it will pull in style. If the trajectory is onwards and upwards, then go big now and have a stress-free towing experience.

23' 5000 lbs a Diesel would be overkill but it would get you much better mileage. It also depends on how fast you tow.. anything over 65 and the fuel gauge should show triple $$$ for the higher rate of fuel consumption..

Everyone's input is truly appreciated. I have a lot to think about. Since I don't do a lot of traveling getting the diesel is probably out since I didn't realize how much more than a gasser it really was and how much it is to maintain it. I think it's down to an expedition or a 4 door gas superduty truck. I like the truck because you can haul stuff but my girls would really enjoy the entertainment that comes with an SUV. Thanks again everyone.

I can't comment on diesel vs gas other than to say that maintenance costs will be higher, no matter what the diesel proponents try to tell you. TCO though I think is going to be different for different owners. Its not an apples to apples comparison.

What I can tell is that I have owned 3 Suburbans, a GMC Safari, and a Trailblazer. The truck in my sig is my first PU. Why did I wait so long?! I will never buy an SUV again! The truck is just so versatile! I can also tell you that my Sierra has a 5.3 and 3:73 gears and tows our trailer like a dream. It's close to 5k #.

If entertainment for the kids is important, that's not limited to SUVs. Just look for a decked out crew cab truck.

Of course money is USUALLY an object, but if it wasn't then there would be no argument. It would be a Diesel SUV pickup truck

Okay, first off, I haven't read all these posts. But owning three diesels for a combined 30 plus years, I can say that, in my experience, maintenance costs have not been a factor. To the contrary, the engines will outlast the bodies around them. On the other hand, they aren't cheap to buy, and with your rig, hardly needed. If it was my camper I'd use one of the four Expeditions we have had, still have two of them, and they are rated at around 8000# towing. That's not a weight I'd put behind them, but five thousand? Sure. My wife routinely pulls 4000, much of it between 6000 and 9000' altitude where power is way off. Your 5000 pounds? An Expy would pull it and the kids, and they could have DVDs in the back seat. Hint: If you get the fancy ones, like DW's King Ranch with rear captain chairs or whatever they call them, the center row of seats will NOt fold flat like our XLT does, and that's great for hauling lots of stuff or dogs. Kids, not so much!

I'm the other way around. I've had pick ups and the SUV is better. Especially with a family and a dog. The lack of the 3rd row seat and no inside storage space makes them too much of a compromise. If I had a 5th wheel or something messy to carry in the bed a pick up would make sense but for now they don't.

I like to see more diesels in SUVs. The Grand Cherokee offers one but it's only available on the top trim level making it over priced.
