Tires

I've had my 29bhs for 5 years and I understand that would be time to change the tires. It cam new with GoodYears. The Jayco dealer's quote seemed high $525 - 550 installed for 4 Tow Masters. My question, has anybody used a regular tire shop to replace travel trailer tires? I take my truck to Discount Tire and I like their prices. I just don't see how I'd get the camper in their shop!
Thanks.

Our Discount Tire has a smallish parking lot out front but is larger behind the store. I make an early appointment and get there 1/2 hour or more before they open. I can then use the whole lot to position my trailer where they want it well before they open. That kind of strategy may or may not work for you.

I took my trailer to a tire store, they kept me hooked up, brought out a floor jack and did one tire at a time. They even balanced the wheels and tires, which the factory had not done.

Just a suggestion but look into LT tires in stead of the St's it came with. Just saying....

Mine came from discount too.

Search the forum for comments on TowMaster tires. They have had significant problems.

I wanted a heavy duty load range E 15" tire for my fifth wheel. The only tire I could find that met those specs was a Maxxim trailer tire. I never had any problems:

That's Maxxis not Maxxim.

Discount tire did our old pop up and truck at the same time. If I remember correctly, I dropped the trailer in the lot and the did it with floor jacks while the truck was in the bay.

I just had my tires replaced, by Discount Tire. The price seamed faie, and I upgraded load ratings. It took about a week for them to get the tires in.

Call them up and inquire about doing the trailer, they gabe me tire options and a quote overy the phone. I parked along side their building, and they did the work outside. They told me I could drop the trailer off, I just left it hooked up, and went for lunch down the block.

Thanks all. I plan on stopping by to ask at Discount Tire today. My camper came with Goodyear and they are rated for load C, the only tires I see that would fit and are Load C on their website are Carlisles. Never heard of them. They do have some Load D's made by Hankook and Hartland. Never heard of them either.

Thanks again for the help. I hate replacing the Goodyears, they still look like new!

I really have heard good things about the Radial Trail by Carlisle. Of course they are the most expensive but a trouble free experience is worth a few extra bucks.
I'm not familiar with the cl C offerings but If the rims support it and you can get the same tire in a Class D, why not?

There was a Carlisle load range D tire listed. It is the "HD" tire

Thanks

The guy at Discount Tire showed me exactly how to bring the camper in and told me their least busiest time to do it. I went with the Hartland Load Range D's. I didn't opt to replace the spare, may wait another year to save some money now. This was over $100 cheaper than the dealer for a better tire and the tire replacement plan. Thanks again for the help. I'll be getting the tires on Tuesday!

Discount Tire has always been the best place for me to get TT tires!

It's suggested that anyone pricing TT tires to do your research. As far as Towmax tires, there's been petitions to the NTSB to investigate failures seen with these junk Chinese tires. My research suggested Maxxis since they make a load range E tire in 15". Most manufacturers do not. Jayco put 5000 lb axles under my rig, load range D tires that amounted the package to be overloaded since my 334 Eagle weights 10,500 give or take. My unit came with Towmax tires and after towing even short distances the tires were blazing hot, actually hotter then the hubs. I put the Load range E Maxxis on and they run about half the temperature. No more sway either as experienced before. Discount tire was the most helpful.

I took our old hybrid to a place that specializes in big rigs, but also does passenger car tires. They have the room and equipment for this kind of stuff. They just backed it in and left of hooked up, and lifted it with a big floor jack.

Maxxis tires on our camper as well. Might be a few dollars more but worth it.
