Tires - Upgr

I just bought a new Jayco Flight 33 BHTS that came with 225 75R 15 tires that look like they are going to explode sitting still and at correct pressure. I want to upgrade to better tire and possibly aluminum wheels but see no real options with this size tire. I am looking for recommendations for a bigger tire with at least a 12-14 ply rating and think I need to go to a 16" wheel to do so. Does anyone know what larger tire/wheel will fit correctly? I am also in need of the wheel pattern and Jayco could not tell me. Thanks for any recommendations.

That "exploding" look is just how ST tires look. If you go a bigger wheel just make sure you've got enough clearance in the wheel tub. Also keep in mind that a higher rated tire will not increase your load capacity. The limiting factor is still the axle rating.

Call Tireco 574-293-0581 they are the ones that supply rims to Jayco. They will be the best ones to tell you what is the best rims.

Here's one way to measure for lug pattern. I prefer to use millimeters as more accurate. My UTV stock wheels are 2 mms larger than wheels off of a Ford Focus, but that wheel will fit.

To me, the quality of a rim is determined by it's design testing and rating, not by its metal of construction. A steel rim may be superior to an aluminum rim, or the reverse.

One possibility to increase the load capacity of your tires in a 15 inch rim size is to go to Maxxis Tires. Maxxis (and I think Goodyear Marathon) have a load range E trailer tire. For a while Maxxis was almost universally acclaimed, and then got a smattering of complaints. I've got in excess of 25000 miles on a set and so far have had no issues with then.

Even if you keep tires in a 15 inch size, you might have to replace your rims due to the increased air pressure that a load range E tire requires. Your current rims may have a paper label them stating their pressure rating, or the rating may be stamped on the rim. Obviously you don't want an 80 PSI tire on a 65 PSI rim.

noversteet: I believe Maxxis, Goodyear, and Carlisle make load range E tires. ST tires from all three manufacturers have had their good and bad reviews - you'll find lots of threads. My impression is that quality deteriorated but has come up. We have Carlisle Radial Trail RH load range E tires on our Boy Scout trailer and they seem to work well.

You may also consider LT tires; LT22575R16E tires are only one inch in diameter greater than your 15 inch load range D trailer tires.

At the risk of redundancy, higher capacity tires are good, but you axle ratings will not increase and you must have higher capacity wheels.

Just put 10 ply Hercules tires [load range e] on the stock Jayco alumnium [sp] rims. Called Tireco and explained to them what tires I put on and the rims We have and was told by Diana that the rims I have will handle the 80psi of the new rims. Tireco is the makers of the rims that Jayco uses.
