Question To cover or not...

As our winter approaches we found a lady who has a storage building to fit our coach for rent. As fall started we decided to save our money and just park our TT next to the house so we could pull it out if we want to go to warmer places this winter. Our coach is a 2002 unit who has spent its whole life out in the winter weather so storing it inside, where we couldn't get it out till spring, just didn't make any sense to me. This is where my question comes in. Should I cover it with a tarp or just let the coach face the winter bare naked? I had heard both pros and cons to covering but I would like to hear what people in the northern part of the country, and who experience snow/ice, have to say. Any comments???

How's the snow load up there? Any problems in the past?

I just cover the roof and for me its peace of mind to protect it from the elements.

No tarp! Tarps will trap moisture underneath and potentially cause issues. Either get a breathable cover, get a carport or leave it uncovered. If you leave it uncovered, make sure that you climb on the roof and inspect your caulk or replace your caulk joints with Eternabond tape.

A properly caulked/taped roof will survive the winter just fine.

We had been covering our small Sunny Brook trailer with a breathing RV cover. Problem was the trailer had a cargo rack on top and it would trap a LOT of water. I didn't think the weight of the water was a good thing so this year we did not cover it.

If everything is sealed up good it will be fine without a cover. I drive by my local dealer and 100s of campers are sitting uncovered on the lot with a foot plus of snow on them all winter.

I use several pool noodles perpendicular to the edge for ventilation under the tarp and after 3 winters no slime, mildew or moisture. As long as you don't heat or turn the frig on the TT you'll be fine.

Don't know about past snow load...we purchased the used coach this spring so we have no info on past snow loads. If in the past we can expect lots of snow here so we'll have to see what comes down as white rain...

I've been covering for over 20 years, both in Florida and Western NY when I bring the unit home. I've always had excellent results. But I buy the top rated covers. Like Goldline and Sunbrella. Some I know in Fl don't and I can tell by the look of their rigs. But it's everyone's own preference.

Before you walk away from the roof check your TV antenna cable where it enters the roof. Make sure that little rubber boot is not cracked and make sure it's snapped in place. The next check is the radio mast. When you take the mast off you'll see 1 screw that holds the mast to the roof and you want to back it out and see if it's rusty ( mine was). I put some caulk in the hole, replaced the screw and put a dab of caulk on top of that screw.

I bought a cover for my Jayco X23B. While examining the radio mast, I noticed there was no apparant way to remove the antenna. No screw. Looks like you just fold it down. Any comments?

Look for a Philips screw from the side. Loosen it and the mast & spring will fall down.

Like Mike said there is a single screw on the side. I just took mine off last night. When I set the ladder on the side of my camper the screw was on the opposite side I was...
