Total Newbie - White Hawk question

Hi Everyone,

We are ~3 weeks away from taking delivery of a WH 25 Bhs, and could not be more excited. It'll be our first travel trailer, actually our first camper of any kind. I used to go with my family in a pop up as a kid, and we rented a hybrid earlier this summer to go with friends, and voila: family's hooked!!

My question is a about Lend-a-Hands, or anything that may help us with the door. Our dealer (who has been fantastic) said that they could not install anything on the WH because there was no backing in that area.

Does anyone know of any other options? We have 3 girls (6,3 and 2) and we were hoping to make it a little easier for them to into the trailer, etc.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

PL

I would call Jayco directly with your VIN number and ask them directly. Per their website the number is 574-825-5861.

There are many aftermarket options available, but like your dealer said it's all about what's going to hold the screws.

I'm surprised to hear that your WH didn't come with a handle. There's nothing there presently?

That's a good idea, I will likely call once we take delivery. It has a handle, but it's a little small and high for the little ones. I may be no issue, we'll see.

Thanks again,

We started RVing when our girls were 4 and 6, and they would try to swing from the handle on our old trailer like little monkees. Luckily they only did it a couple times without incident, but I'm sure glad the screws held. Congrats on the new trailer and safe travels!

Monkeys, that's a accurate description, ha.

Another question, sorry unrelated:

What type of chocks are recommended? The wedge type, or the X-Type, can you use both, is this overkill? (Feel free to correct any of my terminology along the way = rookie).

Thanks,
PL

Definitely not overkill to use both types of chocks. A gentleman recently posted on here about having problems with one of the little yellow plastic wedge chocks. It collapsed under the wheel.
Personally, I use wood chocks that I cut into a wedge. I also made my own chocks to go between the wheels kinda sorta like the x chocks. Several on here have done it.
By the way, your location says Stanley. Is that Stanley, VA? I am guessing not since your user name has NC.

I use both the wedge and the X-Type wide. I have seen people use only the X-Type's but they are supposed to be as an addition to prevent the front to back and side-to-side rocking when the trailer is grounded. It may be overkill but safe and stable is good enough for me, especially since it doesn't create any extra work.

Hi Howie, That's good advice. Maybe I'll purchase some X chocks and make some wood chocks. That may work. Kind of scary about the plastic chock collapsing.

Not Virginia, just NW of Charlotte NC. Lake Norman may be a better description.

Here is the thread talking about the collapsed chock. Also has some info on other chocks. I posted a pic of the between the wheel chocks in there also.

Do the X-chocks fit the White Hawk's extended wheel base? I assumed not and went straight for plastic ones. Might have to loop back on that decision.

And for what it's worth, my two year-old scrambles up and down our WH steps unaided without missing a beat.

Thanks Moosiedad,
I will check the X-chocks before I buy also. I appreciate the vote of confidence with the kids, I'll probably leave it for now. Thank you.

Btw, can I ask you how your tow vehicle performs? Only reason I ask is because I am using similar relative capacities for our setup (7500 max for 5000 trailer - before options), think yours is ~8600 and 6000 trailer.

Thanks again,

BAL offers an extended chock that should fit the wide stance of a white hawk.

I decided to go with Anderson levelers and BAL X-chocks. Hopefully it works well on the X23B.

I bought the BAL extended X-chocks after reading a couple of scary stories of close calls people had while using the little plastic wedge chocks. Haven't used them yet, but did check to see if they would extend for our White Hawk, and they seem to be fine.

Cheers,
Greg

I think I'm headed that way too.

Do most of you use one of these on each side? Many seem to be sold individual is why I am asking.

Thanks for the tip, 12volt. I'll add those to my Christmas list.

Our tow vehicle does great, Phyllis. It still manages to have some pep with all that weight back there, and only shows minor strain on the big hills. However, I'll add we've not ever approached our maximum capacity for weight.

Are you referring to the wedge or X style chocks? If wedge, it would be 2 on each side. (1 in front & 1 behind a wheel) The X is one on each side.

The extended X-chocks work well on the WH wide stance axles. I also discovered that a quick way to open them up is to use a cordless drill with the same adapter used for the stabilizers. Pretty sure I read this on here several months ago, but something to consider when setting the X-chocks is tire temperature - the tires "shrink" as they cool and the chocks can loosen...
