Tow Vehicle Surprise.

I recently bought our 26BH. The original plan was to pull it with our 2015 Explorer sport. There were lengthy discussions of weights and suitability around here. The little Explorer pulled the TT like a champ, it really did. But a trip to the scales, and I was right at CGVWR with little cargo and no passengers. DW and I discussed it and I sold my beloved 1995 F 150, and bought a 1996 F-350, with a powerstoke. Problem Solved. Well on paper. The Explorer, hands down, had more pep. I've only pulled about 25 mile to and from the dealer. I was using 5 free links on the WD with the Explorer. I went to the dealer with the F-350 with 3 free links, and it was a tad low at the on the tongue, and felt it bobbing a bit in the back. So on the return trip, I pick up to 4 links hanging. That seemed to make the set up wiggle a bit more. But all in all, it is NOT a night and day difference I expected.

Work on getting the WDH set up for the new height TV.
I've always understood that you want a slightly tongue down additude on the trailer versus a tongue up additude.

You should notice a difference as far as power up hills and sway shouldn't exist at all with your new combo.

Good luck and congrats on the new TV!

I put the trailer level, and the ball is right at the tongue, seem about right? I didn't feel sway going, but I did feel a bit coming. Maybe since the truck has the suspension to carry, I should back down to three links and just tolerate the feel of the weight on the back axle?

The Explorer was a twin turbo V6 with a 6 speed auto. On a hill, it'd just down shift and sing on at 4500 RPM, perfectly content.

It sounds like you have the right height if you're level and the tongue lines up well with the ball. One you add the tongue weight the the tv you should be tongue down just right.
I guess the only foolproof way to get the WDH set up perfect is to go to a CAT scale.

How many miles on the power stroke? I don't know much about fords and your f350 is basically 20 years old, but my '07 Duramax is night and day difference over the 1500 I had. Stinks your experience wasn't better. The '96 may be wore out?

I still drive a 7.3 and love the pulling power. The one ton should preform as well as my 3/4 ton. I finally bought a programmer last summer after getting some advice here. Best thing I have done to the TV. Mileage unchanged about 11 towing. Noticeable performance difference towing and less down shifting on hills. I'm on my first tank w/o the trailer and mileage seems up, 300 miles and 1/2 tank, I'll know better when I fuel next.

That 26Bh is 5K or so and I doubt you need the WDH the TV suspension should handle that. My last 5er was about the same weight and I never knew it was there with the 250.

I think that is the real deal. I don't think it is terribly worn out. Just vehicles have come a long way in 20 years. A new F-150 has nearly the same trailer and CGVWR of my 1996 F-350. Ford says, 9900# trailer, and 16000# combined. Not saying it doesn't get it done, it certainly does, but props to the little Explorer for keeping pace.

I already have the chip. I don't think I would want to pull without it. I'm about to do an open air filter and new 3" downpipe. I think I will back down to 3 links and let the rear axle have more weight. I still want to use it just for the sway control, but I think you are right.
I've pulled more than one 6000# (trailer and car) set ups that had probably 700-800# on the tongue, and no WDH. Only difference is physical size.

I think alot of it with the Explorer was gearing and RPM. With 6 speeds and a turbo V6 it is happy to downshift and sing at 4000-5000 when it needs to. But it is 50% more hp than the F-350 and only about 15% decrease in torque.....

Is that a naturally aspirated 7.3 or turbo?

I've noticed my 350 (a turbo 6.7) seems to have a bit of turbo lag but when it catches up, pretty impressive. I towed our little X23B with the 350 when we first bought the truck and discovered the hitch receiver was lower on the 350 than on the previous TV (an '03 Expedition) which was a big surprise. IMHO start with the hitch height and then add a bit WDH. I wouldn't expect the 350 to squat much with the TT hitched so little if any weight transfer would be needed. The TT might benefit from some sway control tho.

I would suspect the real advantages in the 350 over the Explorer would be in payload and overall rig stability, especially on windy days and when getting passed by large profile vehicles. That`s where I noticed the difference when moving from a 1500 5.3l to a 2500 6.0. Not so much the power but better command of the rig and road.

Maybe you should trade up for a semi hauler.

FeaturesPhoto of an RV Hauler from a the front at an angle
RVHAULERS – THE RIGHT SIZE

Volvo tractor units are the most popular units people choose as RVHaulers. The tractor units are well known for their quiet interiors, and their large roomy cabs. The cabs are the widest on the market. These sleek aerodynamic trucks look great with your 5er or 5th wheel behind.

We have standardized on white units-which can easily be striped to match your trailer.

Volvo 610, Volvo 630, and Volvo 730 s are easily recognized by their mid height sleepers
Turning radius is 8 feet smaller than a crew cab pickup!
Surprisingly, these trucks are only 12” longer than a crew cab pickup!

CUSTOMIZATIONS

There are many customizations that can be added to our base trucks. Many people choose to have a flat deck installed behind the cab. A standard 8 foot deck can carry a golf cart, small car, quads or a couple harleys and still pull your trailer. With an RVHauler, there is no need to purchase a toy hauler trailer. Keep your trailer full sized with living space, and carry the toys on the truck where the weight is no issue.

Easy to connect! All trucks can include rear view cameras
Seating customized to include rear captains chairs, or bench seating
Many of our rv pullers have the workstation configuration with a table and bench seating in the back sleeper
Don’t forget to add the GPS navigation, and on-board computer
Photo of RV Hauler full rear view
RVHAULERS – POWER, BRAKING AND CONTROL

These Volvo 670, Volvo 780 trucks with full height sleepers are very popular units. Two feet higher than the model 610 and 630s, these trucks come from the factory standard with dual bunks, refrigerator, and an optional microwave. Additional side windows, and skylight add considerable light and storage to the rear sleeper.

All trucks are equipped with either Cummins Diesel or Volvo Diesel Power
Engine brakes / jake brakes are standard, making braking and downhilling easy
All trucks come standard with air ride 5th wheel trailer hitches, and bumper pull hitches
Autoshift Transmissions – no clutch or stickshift, Meritor and i-shift ishift models are common
400HP, 465Hp, 500 HP or more horsepower – 1500 to 1650 and more ftlbs foot lbs of torque – depending on model chosen
hoto of RV Hauler luxerious interior
RVHAULERS – INTERIOR LUXURY

These trucks are designed to be driven all day, all week. When you sit in one of our trucks, you will immediately notice the superior seating and dash arrangement. There is very little dash difference between a pickup and our units.

8 way power air ride seats, 3 lumbar, and adjustable bolsters on most models
Tilt and telescoping steering, air bags, cruise control all at your fingertips
Huge heated power mirrors combined with large windows give great visibility
6 speaker stereo, satellite radio, optional 4 screen DVD, optional satellite navigation, optional tire inflation monitoring for truck and trailer tires

You must have the 4:10's. I was sitting at about 1600rpm at 60. But you are right, just chugging along.
