Towing 37'6" versus 31' 6" Jayflight

Hi all,

We currently have a 31' 6" Jayflight 27RLS. We are considering the 37' 6" Jayflight 34RSBS.

Tow vehicle is not an issue at all (Ram 2500 Cummins) But I'd like opinions from anyone who has added the 6 feet of length to the trailer, and the difference in towing the longer rig. We use weight distribution bars and a good anti-sway unit already. We've never had any sway problems.

Is it a big deal difference?

Thank you in advance!

I tow 30'6 right now regularly, and previous to this I towed 22'. I find the longer trailer actually tows nicer, but that might be because it's a bit heavier and more planted on the road, too.

I have towed a 36 footer as well briefly, and as far as towing at speed is concerned there wasn't much difference. Mind you, they were 2 different trucks so that could have something to do with it. A 36 footer behind my truck would be too much in my opinion.

I did find, however, that maneuvering the trailer into parking/camping spots was a bit more challenging especially backing up. Also if you ever plan on taking a ferry where they charge by the foot, be prepared to sell a kidney.

Thank you, no ferry's in Arizona! But you never know...

Good advice. I'm guessing it's not a big deal to tow, just the understandably more complicated back in. Which we do a lot when we camp. I'm getting better at it. HAHA.

Depending on where you camp, you may find substantually fewer sites can accomodate the longer TT. Many government campsites are limited to 30'.

Happy Camping !

We upgraded from a 24' HTT to a 39' 5er and it was a pretty big jump for me. The longer length plus the towing differences of bumper-pull vs 5th took some getting used to. I'm over that now and can say the 5th is an easy trailer to tow.

I wouldn't do it. It will cause more grief down the road. Next thing you'll want a 42' 5th wheel.

HA yes! We started with a Jayco X23B and went to the 27RLS. We love that except the DW wants a king bed and likes the extra room, and nicer kitchen, and fireplace, and 2nd A/C.....

I used to be a Scoutmaster so my standards are somewhat more relaxed... Like they say, there's camping and then there's camping with a girl.

We know a fifth wheel would be nice, but we'd have to upgrade our truck - which we sort of just bought. We have the RAM 2500 4x4 mega cab with a payload of only 1975. Not enough for a loaded 5th. It would all be a bigger move than we want for how we camp.

I think the extra 6 feet would be something but not impossible.

Buy what you like, you will get used to the extra length. Some state parks you will have to be careful but it can be done. We tow a 35 foot 6 inches with a Ford Excursion and there hasn't been anyplace that I could not get into. So if you like it buy it and have fun.

All I can add is to watch the extra tail swing on tight turns.

I would echo WVDusty. Watch the tail length (distance behind axles). RV manufacturers keep the axles forward in order to keep torque weights lower. The result is your turning 10+ feet of overhang back there.

It shouldn't stop you though. It is just something to get used to. That is what spotters are for. You bought her a nice Rv. Teach her to spot you!
