Trailer Tires
I have a 2016 28 DSBH that I just love. Fixin to be making a month long trip in May to Grand Canyon and beyond. I have about 1,200 miles on the trailer and was wondering about the tires on the trailer. This trip will be around 5,000 miles long. The tires look brand new but they are a big concern on this trip. Any thoughts? First post so be nice to rookie!!!

Not sure what tires you have, but I'll guess they're Rainer. If so, I'd replace them with something better. Go with load range e Maxxis or if your rims can accommodate them, get some G rated. I have sailun s637 on my fifth wheel.
Howdy from northwest Houston and welcome.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the trailer.
You will probably get a number of differing opinions on when to replace your TT tires. A number of us have struggled with this issue.
I decided to replace mine in the spring. They will be 2 years old and have about 8,500mi on them. They look fine, but we hope to make a long trip next year and will feel better with new tires at that point.

Mike, it would help if we knew the brand of tire, rim size and the load rating. On that trailer I imagine you have a d-rated tire on 15" rims. Tough decision on replacing tires with that few miles on them. Some on here have had no issues on their OEM tires with 10K and some have had blowouts after 500 miles. Oh and welcome to the Forum.

If it helps Mike, we towed our 2015 White Hawk from Seattle to Ohio and back in 2015 and from Seattle to Las Cruces New Mexico and back in 2016 with the fac tory tires and had no problems.
If you do replace them, I agree with Magnolia Tom, get the Maxxis brand. Available from Discount Tire.

I replaced my OEM Raniers after only 500 miles of towing for no other reason than peace of mind. We were planning a trip to North Carolina from New York and I wasn't comfortable with what I had. I went with Maxxis load range E from Discount Tire as others have done. I sold my Raniers on Craigslist and recovered 1/2 the cost of my new tires.

Mike just remember that all trailer tires (ST) are only rated to 65 mph. Blowouts are one of the consequences of ignoring that

I have the same trailer you have... and it had ST205-75-R14 tires in load range C. I got my trailer in August and have made a 3,000 mile trip and several shorter ones. Mine came with Ranier tires and I've already had a blowout and ruined a wheel. I am careful with inflation and speed. I was pretty disappointed with the performance of these tires. I ended up with having to buy a spare wheel and tire from Firestone in Little Rock at an inflated price. I had been reading about the 14" load range D, Radial Trail HD tires from Carlisle. They also have a higher speed rating of 81mph. Discount Tire wanted $102- each. I had found them for a better price and to my surprise, DT honored that price. I bought a new wheel on eBay, and replaced all of the Raniers, including the spare. The wheel was about $80-, and for 5 tires, mounted, balanced, metal stems, and road hazard was $501-.
I would have been better off if I had listened to that little voice in my head telling me to replace those tires before my trip... but I didn't. I spent a total of $710- because of these crappy tires, but at least I have a second spare... even if it's a load range C tire, it'll get me down the road in a pinch.

Agreed! Also like to add that under inflation and over-loading also could contribute to "issues".

ST tires that do not have a speed rating embossed on the tire are rated at 65mph. The ones I just got have a speed rating of M, which translates to 81mph. No, I don't intend to tow that fast. 65 is plenty good and then only if I'm hurrying. Oh, but I'm retired... I don't hurry any more. Glad to see the tire companies waking up a bit.

Actually, that is not a true statement. There are several ST tires with speed ratings in excess of 65 MPH.

Thanks for all the advice on the tires. I'm going to start looking for the tires mentioned. I'm going to swap them before the trip for a little peace of mind. THANKS again for all your help!!!

I've got the original ToxMAx tires that came with my 2015 32BHDS that I took delivery of in October 2014.
I've put nearly 5,300 miles on them since '14, and have had zero problems.
tires blow due to excess heat.
Excess heat comes from under inflation
Excess heat comes from over loading
Excess heat comes from seized bearings.
Just be smart, and don't over drive the tires you have.

To that list, add that tires may blow due to manufacturing defects, sun exposure, excessive age, in addition to excessive speed (and I'm sure there's more).
We have ~8,500mi on our Rainier tires with no problems. They look fine, but they'll be replaced in the spring before our next long trip.

I'd say you are lucky to get that kind of life out of those tires. Everything you say is 100% correct. I had a set on my previous rig. 3 of 4 tires needed replacement in under 500 miles. The treads were separating. I have TPMS, and regularly check tires. I had heard about the "blow max" but thought it was just an exaggeration. It wasn't. I promptly ordered some sailun g rated and never looked back.
One thing that often is overlooked is the delivery of the trailer from Indiana to wherever the dealer is located. Who knows how fast the delivery guy drove and at what pressure the tires were during the delivery. I have a theory that the farther from Indiana, the higher the probability of tire problems with the OEM tires. Especially on bigger fifth wheels. YMMV.

Somewhere on this forum I read that you multiply the rating of your tires by the number of tires and that is the total weight the tires should be carrying. My 2016 23RBM weighs in at 5,100 pounds. The Ranier ST 205-75R 14 tires are each rated at "Max Dual Load 570 Pounds". 4 X 570 = 2,280 Pounds. These are the OEM tires that came on the trailer. So - What am I missing?

Lots of people are scared of trailer tires. I had probably 15K miles on my OEM tires before replacing them, including 1 trip in the length your talking. If they are in good shape properly maintained, I'd keep them. I also always check the tires at every stop, and every morning. In the morning I check air pressure, as the day progresses I check visually they aren't going flat and the temps are reasonable. You will learn the temps as you go. I carry a cheap it laser thermometer in the door of the tv.

I think your 570 pounds is wrong. I looked up that tire and it showed 1760 lbs capacity at 50 psi.

Whats the usual recommendation for mileage for changining OEM tires?
We have about 15,000 miles on the Rainers.. Not finding any defects.
I think it would be wise to change before we make another 15000 mile trip to Alaska.
