Travel Trailer Prep

We are purchasing our very 1st Travel Trailer...It should be coming in later this Month. I am asking your advice on the following. This was a piece of paper given to me from the RV Dealer here in Michigan:
Here is what I was given on paper:
Multi Point Inspection $349.95
AC Service 99.95
Water System Service 129.95
Water Heater Service 79.95
Detail Your RV 121.00
Seal tech Test 149.95
Full Propane 59.90
Battery (27) 149.95
Battery Box 19.95
Install Battery & Battery Box 60.50
30 Amp to 15 Amp Adapter 6.95
D-Ring Hook 1.95
Lock Pin 3.95
Pin & Cable 6.95
AA Batteries for your CO Detector 2.97
9V Battery for smoke Detector 3.49
Tech Check 60.50
Demo your Coach 121.00
total $1428.81 Less discount of $432.81 Total $996.00
So do all these look correct? This is our very first Travel Trailer not a Coach?

I don't recall any additional fees other than the cost of the trailer in any of my previous purchases. However, I am certain they calculate it in the total price. If you got a great deal on the unit with the extra charges added, then it isn't a huge issue, otherwise I wouldn't pay an additional fee for typical dealer responsibilities.

Do yourself a favor and don't deal with General RV, I live a few miles from their Wixom location. They gave me a similar list of fees and I walked out as the salesman tried to get me to stop. Just Google General RV and read all the nightmare stories. If you want a fair deal with no pressure try Haylett RV in Coldwater, I drove 140 miles and was treated like family from day one and 18 months later they still take care of the few problems I have had.

We already gave them $1500 and I'm sorry we did. Oh well, Do you believe they try and charge you $60 to install a battery and box....Holy Crap!
And I saw Hewlitt RV on You Tube and I should have called them. The guy in finance quickly had "no refund" stamped on the receipts .

I'm not an attorney, but in many cases you have 3 (business?) days to cancel a contract.

Are you able to opt out of any of the services on that list. The only item that seems fair is the demo fee for $121, the rest are services that they won't even do. If you are handy you can install your own battery, fill propane tanks, and install a few batteries which should be installed anyway from the factory. Just make sure before you pay for it you go over every inch and all systems making sure everything works , don't close the deal until everything is fixed. Don't trust them if they say parts are ordered so lets close and we will fix it later. If you go that route it will be months for parts to arrive then a month or two sitting waiting for service.

I would ask just what exactly the multi point inspection covers when every system has a seperate charge. To be honest if presented with that list during negotiations my blood would have boiled.

General RV is the KING of rip offs. I live five miles from their headquarters mega center and wondered how they paid for it. This place is brand new on 45 acres fronting a major freeway, they have 50 service bays, and about 20 acres filled with a dozen various brands of RVs. You cant even get on the lot without a salesman, access is off the large showroom. They are very high pressure to purchase, this was also my first RV purchase but I had done my homework and knew about discount ranges and garbage fees added to the bottom line. Their price on the RV was ok but when he dropped similar fees on me I shook my head said thanks and walked out. Now I know how they pay for that building.

If you are stuck in that contract, and stuck having to pay some (if not all) of those fees, then you should insist on being physically present to watch their techs do those inspections. Don't insist with the salesman, insist with the manager.

When we bought our TT a few months ago, we negotiated a price with the dealer and agreed on the bottom line price. It was 31% off MSRP. That price included the pre-delivery prep, acceptance walk through, WDH hitch and installation, 2 full 30lb propane tanks and one battery plus a few small thank you gifts. Great small town dealership. They even went on a drive with us to make sure everything was good. They were able to make an adjustment to the WDH which made towing great.

Personally, enjoy reading reports like these.

Would you mind sharing the name of the dealer? Maybe someone in the JOF would like to see about buying from them.

The dealer is Harper Camperland. They have 2 locations. One in Harper, KS and one in Great Bend, KS. The one in Harper, KS has been owned by one owner for over 30 years. They try hard to make it right.

I don't understand how they could charge you for anything you did not receive and if you chose to walk away that would mean you received nothing. I am hard headed enough, and silly enough, that even if it cost me the down payment, I would walk. Perhaps when you show them you are serious about dropping the deal they may become a bit more realistic about ripping you off for these outrageous fees.

Just got off the phone with my salesman (who is a good fellow) and the Business Manager and told them I am not going to purchase anything at this time. After double teaming me for 15 minutes I told them I was sorry we could do the deal. Man, you guys were right about this place, "what a piece of work". Oh well, live and learn. I feel a lot better now.
