Water heater ?

Tried to light my water heater on LP for the first time and after a bit when it started it had flames coming out of the vented tube in the center of the pic!! As you see it melted a bit of the yellow tag. I blew it out and shut it down. Not sure how it happens when igniter is in tube ? Don't really want to fire it up again till I know what happened. Any input would help. Forgot pic. Next post

Thanks.

Bet you have a critters nest inside, either a wasp nest or even a spiders web in the burner tube.

I'm pretty much sold on screens. Before we bought the first TT an uncle told a story of the furnace failure. Turned out dirt daubbers had blocked the air flow. Took a while to diagnose and then fix, translate to $$$. He had to have it fixed as couldn't do the work himself.

I had the same problem not long ago, flame wasn't shooting out the vented tube but it was orange which told me that I had an oxygen depletion somewhere. Thank the Lord these things are mechanically basic, I simply performed the same steps to resolve the issue and things were all good from there.

Just a side not in relation to HW heaters: The one problem I do have is my pilot going out even though the propane is full. To combat this, I figured the problem was one of two things, 1) wind blowing it out or 2) not enough air and the pilot itself starves. So happens to be number two. I can have the HW heater door latched closed while the heater is actually blowing the flame down the tube to heat the water because the flame itself is drawing the air into the heater but with the heater on pilot and the water hot, leaving the door latched starves it of air. To combat this, I don't latch the door it fully closed, I pull the latch through the latch eyelet and then use a pin to keep the door from flopping down but allowing air to travel around the door edge.

Hope that helps others that may be finding the same problem is causing them grief/loss of propane or worse yet, a potentially explosive situation.

Bnear, as long as the thermo couple is functioning, there won't be an explosive situation. A thermo couple uses heat to generate a micro voltage due to a delta heat of a bimetallic strip. Once the pilot goes out, the thermo couple cools, and the micro voltage is no longer being generated. The main gas valve uses the micro voltage to keep the pilot valve open, allowing gas to flow. That's what we need to manually hold open the pilot valve when first starting... That's to allow the thermocouple to warm up and elctrically hold the valve open.
