Water heater trouble

When I try to use my water heater on propane, the ignitor clicks, the flame lights but then after about 10 seconds I hear a clunk and the flame goes out immediately. It seems to me that the regulator is getting a message that the flame is not lit and shuts off the flow of propane but why? Is the thermo couple not sensing that the flame is lit for some reason? Any advice is appreciated.

have you just refilled your propane bottle if so you might have air pockets in your gas line. Try again until it stays lit. If not what year is your unit? Does it have a mixer valve ?

If purging the air pockets from your propane line does not resolve the problem, here is a link to a trouble shooting article on Atwood and Suburban water heaters: http://www.motleyrvrepair.com/water_heaters1.htm

Good Luck!

I always purge the line by lighting the stove. My fridge has a hard time staying lit if I don't.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I always purge the air out of the lines by lighting the stove burners so I know its not air in the line; also the flame is strong, it doesn't sputter like when air is in the line. I started cleaning the connections and the wire from the board to the sensor broke; I am hoping that it was sending a weak signal to the board and shutting off the gas. Will try replacing the sensor assembly. Thanks.
