weight distributing hitch

I just got a 2007 29bhs and i want a weight distributing hitch(wdh). I have a 2005 f350 cc lb 4x4 it will tow it without the wdh but it does set down a little at the connection point.

My local rv store recomended the eav-lift and I was thinking the 1401-0132 1000/10000 priced at 267.19

I also saw a kit for a 1000# wdh with sway control for $280.39 .

So my question is what weight do i need and what brand is good is sway control nessesary or add later if there is a problem

Some WD systems such as the Equalizer and Reese Dual Cam have integrated sway control built into the system. Of course they cost more then the system you mentioned. I have a similar trailer (28BHS) and use a Reese Dual with 1200 lb spring bars. Even though you have a very capable tow vehicle I would go with the sway control also to be safe.

Thanks for the reply Crabman.

Do you think 10,000# sping bars will be enough or do you feel the 12,000 are nessesary? ( the full kit only goes up to 1000/10000) and the TT says GVWR is7500#

The 10,000 and 12,000 lbs you are referring to are the WD hitch rating which cover how much trailer your hitch will tow. The 1200 lb I alluded to was for the spring bars, which are part of the hitch. Various spring bar sizes are available for many WD hitches to match the bars with the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. You may be OK with 1,000 lb spring bars as that is the approximate loaded tongue weight for a 29BHS. There are several threads in the towing forum dedicated to understanding these weights and terminology.

You may want to take a look at this thread about a 28BHS (basically the same trailer as the 29BHS) and Spring bars. The consensus there seems to be 1200 lb bars.

Diesel32,

Welcome to the Jayco forums!

Yep, your TV won't be an issue...., and you'll also find the following reply will basically echo everything that "Crabman" stated.

The 1,200lb rated WDH will give you ideal loaded tongue weight support up to the GVWR of 7,500lbs without being an overkill. I concur that you could get away with a 1,000lb rated WDH, but IMO if you tend to be a heavy packer, and/or have to tow with some fluids in the tanks the 1,000lb rated WDH could become less than ideal under these conditions.

Since the 29BHS is almost 31ft long, a 13% to 15% loaded tongue weight (% of loaded TT weight) range would be recommended.

Example:

* Your 29BHS loaded to 7,500lbs (GVWR) = 975lb to 1,125lb loaded tongue weight range.

* Your 29BHS loaded to 7,000lbs = 910lb to 1,050lb loaded tongue weight range.

* Your 29BHS loaded to 6,500lbs = 845lb to 975lb loaded tongue weight range.

IMO the 6,500lb loaded TT weight would be the minimum loaded weight for the 29BHS, not including fluids in any of the tanks.

Here are some of the '07' 29BHS weight specs/capacities in case you don't haven them:

Weights:

Unloaded Vehicle Weight 5,425 (lbs.)
Dry Hitch Weight 765 (lbs.)
Gross Vehicle Weight 7,500 (lbs.)
Cargo Carrying Capacity 2,075 (lbs.)

Measurements:
Exterior Length 30' 6"
Exterior Height with A/C 124"
Bedroom Interior Height 81"

Tank Capacities:
Fresh Water Capacity (includes water heater) 59 (gals.)
Gray Wastewater Capacity 33 (gals.)
Toilet/Black Wastewater Capacity 33 (gals.)

You can upgrade the standard Reese WDH with the optional Reese HP Dual Cam kit if you don't want to purchase it as a total package deal.

Bob

You can find out quite a bit about your trailer by going to the Jayco archive page where you type in your year and model and can get the floorplan and all the specs. You can even download the brochure and manual

Once we upgraded the TT we wanted a better w/d system then the one we already had. I bought the Reese dual cam. My TT weighs near 10,000 lbs ready to camp. I have the 12000 lbs spring bars. Once the system was properly adjusted the Reese worked fantastic. The Reese helps prevent sway from happening verse the previous used friction type that tried to correct sway once it begun.
