I strongly suggest a trip to a CaT scale, you didn't say what gearing is in TV axles, this can have a big impact

It may not be the weight you are towing, it may be what's in your truck. What's your payload? It's on the weight rating sticker in your driver door.

Make sure your towing capacity really is 6700#. The towing charts listed by places like Trailer Life are generalizations and not at all accurate. Everything you need to know about your towing limits are at your fingertips. GM owners manuals have a towing chart in that breaks out towing capacity and GCWR by engine type and option packages. The RPO sticker in your glove box has all the codes you need to validate what options are on your vehicle, including the codes for your gearing. Finally, look at the tire/weight sticker in your driver's door. It shows your available payload. That's the amount of weight the truck can carry. Already calculated in is the driver and a full tank of gas.

Payload is a critical number that most people overlook. If your payload is 1500#, and your 3 passengers and gear in the truck weigh 500#, that leaves 1000# of payload. Sounds pretty good? Now subtract the tongue weight of the trailer, in this case likely close to 750#. Now you only have 300# left. It runs out real fast. Moreover you have to subtract the weight of everything in the truck from the rated towing capacity, so with 500# of people and gear your towing capacity drops to 6200#.

Yes I forgot to mention my ratio is 3.42 I won't be able to access my manual for a few hours but I will look into it. I guess I should of clarified my question and added it tows fine. If fine means 6-8 mpg and third gear @65 MPH. I'm not nitpicking just wondering . I did a extensive web search for this before posting and it seems I'm the only one with a 2008 1500 GM 5.3L towing under 5500 Lbs that seems like it is struggling. I do appreciate all the responses though . I just cant get to the data at this time to post it .

I towed our 26BH (5k dry) with a 2007 NBS Silverado 1500 5.3, 4 speed and 3.42 gears and I thought it struggled as well. That 4 speed really like to hunt gears and dropping it to 3rd helped but I gave up and sold the truck.

Current 2001 2500HD with the 6.0 has better towing performance but the real difference is in the handling. With the HD, I don't feel like I have to have a death grip on the steering wheel any longer with cross-winds or on a crappy Missouri road.

PJN23RLSW When we bought our White Hawk 30ft DSRE I knew our Tahoe was going to have to work hard but I was surprise to see it would not pull it with the cruse set and in tow mode. With the cruse set it would go to 65 then slowly slow down to 63 down shift slowly make it back to 65 shift and the process would start over. With out the cruse in tow mode it would still constance shift up and down sometime going to red line. Where we live it is less than 50 in elevation and as flat as flat can be. Our Tahoe was 5.3 with tow pk. and 3.4 gears. We 7 to 7.5 MPG

One of my buddies works at the Chevy dealer and here is what he told me. He said some of the Tahoes and lighter 1500 have 4L40 transmission instead of the heavier 4L60 that most have, and the 2500 and 3500 have the 4L80 if they are gas. So he said our had the 4L40 transmission. I don't know.

WE up grade to a HD Duramax LTZ and I have no tow problems at all now.

3:42. You don't need a 2500 to tow that kind of weight, just the right gears. Minimum of 3.73, or a 6 speed trans, which unfortunately our trucks didn't come with until 2010. I tow about 4500# and I could easily tow another 1000#. I would not much more than 6k though, even with it having a 7500# rating.

DocB thanks again for all your knowledge . It does seem the 2008 model year for the Silverado had a lot of shortcomings. Mine has a issue with burning a lot of oil due to the MDS . So I decided to buy a 2500 HD Gasser . It may be overkill for what I am towing and I can't see getting a Duramax even if I could afford it . I have been thinking about getting a new TV for six months now and the 2500 6.0L seems the best fit for me. I want to thank everyone for their input. In the end my Truck just didn't have what it took for me to feel good about towing it.

Xtruckerbob yes that is what I experienced. between 65 and 60 it would just hunt for the right gear. Like I said it wasn't a issue I couldn't of lived with but I found it annoying . I probably could of cruised at 60 and everything would be fine. I just didn't like the way it towed in the end . And after a 1,100 mile pull after I unhooked my TT and drove around the tranny started shifting hard from 1-2 . I knew then I didn't have enough truck and it would leave me stranded .
