If my trailer is hitched up, I'm in Tow/Haul mode. No exceptions. That's how Ford designed the vehicle to perform.

I leave tow/haul turned off, but lockout 6th gear. I find tow/haul is a little too aggressive with the exhaust brake/downshifting when going downhill.

What kind of rpm do you hit up cajon pass? Over 4k?

Just a head's up - ^ You might not get a reply for that question because that post was made by a guy nearly 3 years ago and has only made 3 posts ever...
Knowing what I know of the 5.6 Titan, your assumptions are likely correct.

Great point ha. Thanks. I am looking for rpm advice re how hard to push my F150 5.0 2017 pulling a 7000# loaded TT. I left 30% wiggle room in tow capacity and in payload for hills.
Going up 7% for about 10 min last week it sat about 3-3.5k. I pushed it once to 4.5k to pickup speed and it just sounded terrible! So I finished that last hill at 35-40 mph. That was first time on real grades.

With my 2014 F150 w/ HDPP and 3.5L EB, I put the tranny in Tow/Haul mode, and usually lock out 6th gear.
It's a rare incline here on the east coast that will cause it to drop down to 4th gear.
On the relative flats here, 5th gear is usually about 2200 rpm. 6th gear would drop it down to about 1800 to 1900 rpm.

the power band is up in the 4.5k range so that is where you need to be, it will work at that RPM all day long... lugging the motor on a hill is actually worse than running it at it's designed power band...the other option is to go diesel... and that will start an oil thread..

Just put it in Tow/Haul mode and push the pedal as hard as you need to in order to maintain the speed you desire. Let the computer figure out what gear/rpm to use. What you see is what you get, let it do its thing. The 5.0L is a great engine, and like other comparable displacement naturally aspirated V8s, they need to rev to make their power.

In Arizona there are few areas that are flat, mile after mile. With that being said, I put her in tow-haul mode and lock out 6th. On a 2018 the 6th gear works on the flat, but it is simply too tall for hills. I think the 6th gear on a 2018 is intended for good gas mileage when not towing. I average about 18.5 MPG when not towing, so not complaining.
